i have a texas star modulator v-plus in line
with a realistic navaho and an antron 99.
100 ft coax and 3ft jumper.
problem; modulator works fine on am and
ssb, but not on usb and lsb. on usb and lsb it
will not kick in. it ( the modulator ) just
chatters.
is it suppose to work on these?
i am powering the modulator with a 14 amp
power supply. is there a possible problem there?
any help would be greatly appreciated.

Modulators are AM only and are not biased for SSB and have no delay built in for SSB.

The TSModV is class c, there's no ssb support.
You could put a delay switch, but it probably wouldn't be as clean on ssb.

The modulator is not designed for usb or lsb. You can have a tech add a ssb delay switch to it and that would allow it to be used on ssb.

thank you for the info, but i made a mistake in my
description. the modulator works fine on regular
am and the upper /lower channels, but not on
usb and lsb.

also, the modulator has a single hole plug-in
jack on the back that is marked "key".
can someone tell me what it is for?
thanks for helping me and being patient.i'm still
trying to learn about this stuff.

they come from the factory as 5 watt cw (morse code) transmitters the hole marked key is to hook up the cw input device.

thanks pitbull. so that was it's actual use- a
modulator for morse code transmission?
i guess ,from the info from the other people,
it does not work on usb and lsb- correct?

Greg as Warlock mentioned, you could find a cb shop tech that knows how to add a delay and switch, and then you could use it on ssb. If the radios not overmodulating then it should be all right and sound decent on ssb. It usually runs about $20 for the delay to be put in, around the Indy area anyhow.

It *can* work on ssb, but it must be modified with a ssb delay and switch.

Warlock: Most of the advice you give is right on, but when it comes to a Mod V on SSB you are wrong. A T/S Mod V is designed to be as nonlinear as you can get. That is why it will key 3 or 4 watts and swing to 100 plus. A small AB-1 amp would be a better choice. A simple delay on a Mod V would be a horrible setup for SSB.

I totally agree with the fact a biased amp would be preferrable. I was just answering the question as to could it (ModV) be made to work. Not that it will sound great, but will work without chatter.
