I used to be a subscriber to the old "CB" and "S9" magazines. Hopefully CB isn't so obscure now that nobody publishes a magazine for the hobby.
If nobody knows of any being printed, got any old issues you wanna sell? |

I would be great to have a CB magazine again. We had a nice one in Arkansas in the 1970s, an owner of a weekly newspaper, who was also a CB'er published it, I'm so glad my packrat wife keep some of them, it has adverts for all the old equipment, plus news and pictures of the many CB clubs, coffee breaks, also pictures of CB'ers stations. These are kinda funny, channel 9 react was going strong then, some of their stations are featured, you can see the old Maco, ABC, and other amplifiers with the disclaimer sticker on them, 'For Emergency use only",,,lol, yeah, right. React done a lot of good back then, this was way before cellphones. Anytime, day or night, if you needed help, someone was monitoring channel 9. Then the big sunspot activity with the around the clock skip conditions, ruined that in the late 1970s.
The magazine folded in the 1979-80 period as it, like all publications depend on advertisments for most of their income, when the CB craze passed, most of the dealers went under, and there went the magazine.
It think that bad skip cycle is what ruined CB as it was then. Before that came in 24 hours a day, half the vehicles had antennas, they could talk mobile to mobile several miles, base to mobile, from town to town, then all at once, bam, redline skip constant, you couldn't talk 1 mile, people grew tried of that quick, just us old diehards stayed around. Since that times, a new generation will start every few years, the hobby is on a downcycle in my part of the country now, the cellphones have caused that I think, almost every teenager has one, the kids that did want CBs in that pick-up now has his cell. |

Nope not anymore.. pop comm used to have a Cb section and even that is gone now from what ive seen in the latest mags.....
I myself would like to find some old 1970s CB mags just for Sh*ts and kicks just to see what was popular back then when i was a youngster... |

2990 the man who wrote the pop com column for years died last year and they realy had no one who could write it for them at least that is what was printed by them at the time. CB horizens ( by ham radio ) and S9 ( by CQ ) were both well done i subscribed to both for years along with 73,ham radio and QST. The problem is cost look at pop comm it is $30 per year and thats cheep today, most people simply will not spend that much money when they get just a few pages per month.

CB Radio Magazine folded after 6 issues, I think that was back in 1996.I talked to the former editor (now editing Popular Communications) and he told me that the readership was strong but they had a hard time selling advertising.

are you talking about Tom Kneitel(Sp?)?
He had some very very interesting artivcles in the Cb mags back in the mid 1970s right up until his death. |

Did Tomcat die? If this is true I think there would be major stories in the radio mags.He has been a major contributor to ham/cb/monitorng journalism for over 4 decades.Does anyone know for sure? |

I sure HOPE NOT! He used to write some very lively articles about CB. I think he wrote a book too back in the mid 1980s. |

i dont know if this is the same guy this guy had a column in pop comm and at the time they printed a story that he had died im not a follower of him although ive had pop comm for many years did tom also write for popular electronics?? i noted in my issue that came today the large coverage of crystal radios... but little on cb.. strange mag to say the least. |

Tom Kneitel wrote for Popular Electronics in the late 50's til around 1962 when he created S/9.When S/9 folded in the late 70's or early 80's he formed Popular Communications.It has changed quite a bit since he resigned as editor a few years back,but over all its a good mag for the radio hobbyist. |

In one of the lastest issue of Pop. Comm, Tom Kneitel contributed radio loggings. I have enjoyed his writing since "73 and sincerly hope he is alive and well. |

I have some copies of 1976-79 CB magazines that were puplished state wide in Arkansas. For you youngsters, I'm gonna scan a few of the old advertisments, I'm put one in my profile if anyone cares to see more, let me know, and I'll do more. This one is an advertisment for Amplifiers, yep right on the second page, that's how much people worried about the FCC then. The Palomar's listed are the orginial TX transistor models, actually built by Palomar. They had just started building them about this time, kinda high be todays prices, but they were good ones. |

A few years back The CB World Informer was pulished on paper.Now it's published on the web about once a month.It's a good source of info and has excellent and honest product reviews.If you haven't had a chance to check it out,go for it.I think most people would be impressed with this site. |

The "11 meter Times" was one, also. It was published by Bill Cheek untill the feds pressured him on publishing mods. He later published the "world scanner report" newsletter, as the top scanner guru, publishing three books, until he lost his fight with cancer in 2000...while the feds were still hounding him. |
