Seeking advise from members & guests whom had an opportunity to compare the new DEI-based sweet 16 against Toshiba-based ones. After losing my trusty Toshiba-based workhorse to lighting, I face the conundrum of 1: buying the new DEI-based TS 1600 DX amp 2: rebuilding the old 1600 DX through a place or technician that can get 2SC2879 transistors (an expensive/ risky proposition) 3: going with an Areritrom 811H. I have read ambiguous reports on the DEI (the cheapest option), but mostly it appears that it is no match nor even approaches the reliability/ durability of Toshiba. I'm also frolicking with the idea of a full plunge into Ham gear, but feel it may be overkill for my simple joy of DXing around 27.5 mhz. Any ideas or suggestions? I've search the database to no avail.

Fastboat: Thanks for the tip. Never ran my amps at more than 13.8 V and I follow the 1:4 driving guidelines. The reports I had read on the DEI are somber. After posting this, I ran across a report by a user in another forum, whom speaks favorably about the DEI-based TS 1600dx. Like you, he advises against overvolting. The tech I found on line charges $65 on each Toshiba 2SC2879. After labor & shipping, such repair would cost more than I originally paid to Coppers. So the quest continues, which is half the fun.
