I wanted one so bad when they came out. They looked so much like the police radios. But I have only seen pictures. I lost out on ebay on a brand new one one time. Keith in Atlanta CEF 150 |

Where people blew it with these radios was when they added power microphones. Like their commercial radios, the Motorola Mocat CB radios fed DC to the microphone through the cable to power an amplifier in the mic. By having the first amplification stage in the mic rather than in the radio, they practically eliminated RF rectification audio feedback in the transmitter. It also almost eliminated the possibility of strong RF fields from modulating the CB radio. So, not realizing that the stock mic has a high gain audio stage built in, users would wire up the typical battery powered CB power mic to the Motorolas, and then be disappointed in the results. The battery mics don't have the amount of gain that the Motorola circuit does, so the audio was actually worse. The good news is, with the stock mic, the Motorola CB radios have plenty of audio. The transmit and receive audio is always above average on almost every Motorola product. My only regret is that the FCC didn't make the CB band FM mode instead of AM when it was created, or at least before it became popular. Imagine how many commercially produced radios could have been easily adapted to CB with far superior performance to the "price-point" radios offered all these years!
