I'm getting ready to buy one of these for use on SSB 10/11. I know production always makes changes, and I have been off radio moving around. Got a place to put up a antenna now. So I'm not up to date on the current run. Looking for best RX and SSB stability... Tnx.

in my experience they both work well no noticable amount of drift on ssb.the magnum might put out more
power but imho i think the rci,s just have more audio.i tried using a d104,tuner 3 on the magnum
but reports showed that the stock mic did just as good.. hmm?if ya dont mind using the stock mic you may like the magnum better.if you like a 6 digit display and continous tuning you,ll probaly like the rci more. all in all ths is much like a chevy vs ford debate.there both good

If you are not looking to use it mobile you might look into an ICOM 718 (around $450 on ebay and $735 new) Sure it is a little more, but you get all the HF bands and not just 10/11 AM/SSB. There are plenty of mods on the internet for opening up the TX on them and they come with some really good filtering.

Years back I had a 2950 ( some jerk stole it out of my car) and I also had a 2990. They worked ok for what they were and I often think about putting another 2950/2970 in my truck as I enjoyed the one I had. If I could swing the expense I'd rather have a FT-857D or a IC-7000, but they are both in a very different class of radio and price range.

The stock mic works amazingly well on the RCI. I've heard plenty of idiots putting echo mics on them and they just muffle them up badly. If you have an old D-104 (Non Powered) you can replace the element with a Heil element and it will sound like you are in a studio. Add a Beringer mixer and you're well on your way to having one of the best sounding setups on the air.

If you ask anyone who has owned high quality equipment and knows how to run it. You get what you pay for (most of the time). The higher end ham radios, even on the low end will beat the pants off any Ranger or Magnum.

When I had a lightning strike take out my 2990 the professional Ham radio tech told me he was sad to see it was nothing more than a CB with 10 meter capabilities. I'd used it exclusively for 10 meter operation. I used the insurance claim to put money towards a Yaesu FT-847 and it was the best money I have ever spent.

I've worked the world with it and looking back I wish I'd have bought a better rig sooner.

No matter the radio, put your time and effort into a great antenna. That is where the real reward for investment is going to be found.

Very true. Ham rig is always my first choice, it has always been the cost, even used ones, and mainly finding one locally. Just got lucky got old TS-140S for $100 local. Only known issue is the RX metering is not working. I'm diging into the issue this weekend. Would like the FT-847 someday, and it has 6M my true modern day passion.
