This has been pisted in the tech section with no reply. Im trying to help a young man get his first cb base going. Money is really tight on both ends but im trying anyway. I have a 102" steel whip a battery and charger a cobra 25 and all the coax. This is just scroungings from around the house. Like i say very tight budget. Will this battery and charger work well enough to get this young man started??? |

I wouldn't run the radio with the charger running. The unfiltered charger would produce a nice HUM in the Receive/Transmit. If he knows the tune he might be able to hum along but that would get boring after a while. The battery would need to have enough capacity to run the radio for a while then charge the battery while the radio is not being used...... The Whip needs some sort of counterpoise to work against since it is not mounted on a vehicle. Alles ist besser mit Soße! No I'm not a Tech,I just know enough to be a nuisance.

You say Base Station and the 102 steel whip is mobile. Not saying it won't work but not as good as a base antenna. Your 1st step in a good station ALWAYS starts at the antenna. Being that money is tight try doing a google search on Hamfest in your area and you just might find a CB base antenna and maybe even a power supply that will run the radio a a reasonable cheap price. Good Luck. |

Will it work well enough to get him started? Depends on what you define as well enough. yes it will work as long: 1) You have a decent groundplane on the 9ft whip ( at l;east 3 radials, each at least 8ft long, 2) you mind a bit of hum on the signal. Depending on how well the charger is filters, and how good the battery is you could have anything from no hum up "can't hear the signal for the hum. The only true answer is to try it and see. Thank you guys. Since i have last posted this i talked a few others into getting involved. After all the newbies are the future of cb and ham. The other guys where able to donate this young man a maco 5/8 gp and a boomer 500 with built in 35 amp power supply to power the radio. |

He was very weary of talking while we where there setting everything up for him... but when we got home on our radio's we couldnt get a word in edge wise. |

Star him out right and legal - get rid of the amp. Ther are enough over-driven distorted signals out there, please don't add another one. Tech237 N7AUS God made me an athiest, who are you to question his wisdom?

Tech 237 he is running legal power we latter found out the amp part of the boomer doesn't work. He is just using a bone stock cobra 25. After all he was very impressed that he could talk almost 15 miles on a stock radio base to base. |

Dale he isn't very high maybe 20' from ground to the ground plane. There is a group of us that stay on ch 23 . He has made more distant contacts on the channel depending who is on the radio at the time.. |
