Hi Team,

I am not sure if this is the right section for this as I could not find a section devoted to handheld/walkie-talkies??

I have a pair of pristine looking GE 3-5979 40Ch. handheld CBs.With their original packaging!
What options are available to extend the RX/TX distance of these GE 3-5979 40Ch. H/H CBs?
The radios do not have a external antenna jack nor can the original fixed telescopic centre loaded whip be removed easily.
Has anyone here gone portable and trialed a trailing counterpoise wire attached to the portable/handheld chassis?]

According to Amazon, the GE 3-5979 can still be purchased brand new for under $35 with shipping included.

I have seen them with and without an external antenna jack on them. Obviously, yours is the model without.

If you feel comfortable doing an internal modification, it is easy to add an antenna jack yourself. Use an RCA or BNC panel mount female connector mounted to the plastic case somewhere and connect the base of the whip antenna to the center and the chassis ground to the outer part of the connector. Assuming the whip is collapsed, there will be very little loss in having the jack parallel with the whip.

A bunch of the Radio Shack walkie talkies used this exact same scheme. One advantage is if you have an external antenna connected, and you pull out the whip antenna also, you can "phase" them for directional patterns.

Hey, it's a walkie talkie, who cares about SWR?
