It sort of burns me up to win an item from eBay and when it arrives you discover the radio has been modified. I have gotten three radios that have had the frequency slide modifications done. I have to tag the radio as "Out of Service" and "Do not Operate in Broadcast Mode." Not that I care that some CBer feels the need to invade the 10 and 12 meter band for some reason, I don't want my gear to do that sort of thing. When I get my ham ticket maybe. I'm in the processes of undoing some persons mods. I guess that makes me weird? The tech level of ham band is fairly easy to obtain. If you want to run those frequencies and run additional power get your ham license. Sorry about the rant, but this takes money out of my pocket for equipment I won't use till it is properly repaired. |

I wont buy a radio unless it is modded..... Or at least capable of modding. |

I dont even talk enough to worry about it anymore. Years ago it was the first thing I did when I bought a radio, now I don't even bother. |

A just felt an uncontrollable guilty feeling. Guess I best get down stairs and label my modded radios "OUT OF SERVICE" Wait...... If I do that I wont have anything to talk on. |

Hey, guys... Take it easy on Scooter. He's just trying to do things right. And for that, I salute him.
Just because you CAN modify something doesn't mean you MUST. And, not all modifications are an improvement. Most of the modifications I have seen on a part 95 radio have been detrimental to its performance and/or longevity.
FCC rules aside, why make fun of him for wanting radios that have not been hacked by questionable technicians (or worse)? And, if we drag the FCC rules into this, then Scooter has something over everyone poking fun at him. He's right and you're wrong.
So, look at this from another perspective: Do you poke fun at someone who does not break the speed limit? After reading this thread, I suppose a lot of vehicles with modified CB radios in them probably do.

I have a couple of radios I need to reverse engineer. Didn't get them from flea-bay though.

Thanks for the back up on that. I live under the microscope because of the wife's employer. I have to do everything by the book and within the law. We get investigated every five years and I have had DEEP BACK ROUND checks run on my personal history six times. I think they even know what I had for lunch back in July of 1974. So I'm sorry if I offended some of you guys that do the mods on your radios. I just have to be more careful than most. It also does not help if you are not aware of the modifications and you do not know how to operate it with these mods installed. Some of these modifications look like they were done with a broad axe and sledge hammer.(This one was way off frequency. Down to 8 MHz) I don't know if uncle charlie still does his magic tracking and bust your tail thing or not. I just don't want the Feds kicking my door down. I even get my Frequency meters, volt meters and spectrum analyzer calibrated. I want my gear right on the money. It has to be. |

It goes without saying that for those who want to modify their radios, that's their choice, and that's fine. The line is crossed when someone who chooses to live by the rules falls under ridicule for doing things by the book.
I'm slow to condemn people for having fun with their radios, even if they get more fun out of them by modifying them. If that's what turns you on, then that's great. Assuming you don't actually cause interference or harm anyone, I really don't see the harm.
And, with that said, when I see a guy who chooses to operate WITHIN the law or FCC rules, then I think that is honorable in every way.
