Just curious! I still have my Regency CR 123B SSB, and I like talking on it. Was wondering how many folks here still enjoy and use those old rigs! I still hear a few on 16lsb from time to time. Mine has never been touched but if anyone knows of a crystal mod to get it above channel 23 where the action is, please advise! |

I have an old tube-type 23 channel rig, a Pearce Simpson Guardian 23. Assuming I was on the 11m band, this is certainly the radio I would be using. It has been restored and looks / works like new. VY 73, Your radio 'Mythbuster' since 1998

I seldom talk but occasionally listen. I collect old radios including broadcast receivers from the 20s and 30s, ham rigs and have a bunch of 23 channel CBs, but I won’t bore you all with a complete list. Here are a few: Courier Rebel 23 (my 1st CB radio from 1973 and still works), Royce I-640, Browning Golden Eagle Mark II, SBE Console, Hallicrafters 27. Unfortunately, no Stoner CBs (yet). Does anyone else suffer from “radio widow” sarcasm from their wife? Dan |

I have several that I use from time to time. A RadioShack TRC 47 am ssb, several Royce and assorted other brands. I use the older units with a cigarette lighter plugs and magmount antennas when on a road trip. If I need to rig it down just pull it all down and pitch it in the trunk. I would never treat my prime radios like that. My new DX-959 gets pampered. |

Yes, the older stuff wasn't built "to a price" and certainly had a long service life in mind when designed. My ham station consists of Collins gear, and works perfect. However... The old gear doesn't do a lot of what the new gear does (like DSP, digital modes, etc.) and so is somewhat less useful to most people. Same goes with the older 23 channel CB radios. When the 23 channel rigs were made, long service life was paramount, but lots of the newer features we enjoy now were not yet invented. Few 23 channel rigs have SSB (yes, some do but far less SSB rigs than AM only). Few 23 channel rigs have dual or triple conversion receivers (for good image rejection). Even fewer 23 channel rigs have a built in PA capability or built in SWR meter or (God forbid) built in echo. Clearly, 23 channel rigs excite the minimalists among us. And, who can blame us? Most 23 channel rigs are built magnitudes better than the new rigs. Your radio 'Mythbuster' since 1998

I swapped some crystals on mine, got the upper 30s for SSB and 28 for local AM. I put a new silver salute mic on it and it sounds great! now with this mod, I lost channels 1-8 but gained the above, so I can use it for a good skip shooter! I really enjoy my old regency. |

In a box somewhere is the RS hand held that my grandad bought. He would sit in his house and talk all night just before he passed away in 1970. My aunt gave it to me in 1991 but IIRC it has some kind of battery connection problem and I never really looked to see about fixing it. (No the batteries didn't do the damage). It has a leather case with his handle and call sign in red Dymo tape on the front. "Red Horse", fitting since he was a horseman and Iowa state registered Appaloosa judge. I should look for it and get it back on the air if possible. My first radio was a Gemtronics GTX23, I even had a license (KZI 1661) but it wasn't long before it was worthless. Channel 10 was the place to be in this area and the Saturday night fox hunts were the best. It was a real good time!!! |
