I was heavy in cb in the 70's.I am a new member here. I actually still have vol. 11 issue #10 copper electronics catalogue!!!cd45 rotors sold for $99.95. I will be purchasing from copper,a Magnum S9.for use in my house and in my 2008 f250 superduty truck.I will buy a wilson 1000 for the truck. I will purchase a shooting star 8 element beam for the house. My questions are this. I have a 250 texas star mobile linear I will be using. I plan on using my 20 amp power supply for the linear but only have a 5 amp power supply for my radio. Will my S9 magnum run on the 5 amp supply?? I am not familiar with 10 meter radios. Also what rotor can I get by with for the 8 element quad antenna?? I have a 25ft. tower for the beam antenna. I live on a hill and have a open area between a bunch of trees the tower will be placed. Is that high enough?? I plan on using a 40 ft pole for my ground plain and am wanting an antenna as good as my old avanti astroplane. What do you recommend?? What is the BEST coax cable to use on my base antennas and are the certain lengths that work better or recomended for the best swr readings?? I know this is a lot to ask but noone around our little town is into radios and I have been out of it for almost 30 years. All I want to do is have fun and talk good skip like I used to. Thanks for any help you can give me. Also I will be using a turner Plus 2 desc mike |

If you check on the copper site, they have the rated amp usage for all three of the units you are asking about. Do alittle homework, visit the sites in question and they will give you the recommended amp usage. |

well everything sounds ok but a few things i dont think a 5 amp power supply is big enough for a magnum s9.i would think 10-15 amps minumin the amp is too small for that radio basically the s-9 will overdrive it and burn it up. the texas star 500v is a perfect match.a better radio for the 250 amp would be a cobra 148/grant for antenna theres a antenna called the top one its a remake of the astroplane and from what i here just as good. for coax id use altel 400 series advailable here.everything i put on here is advailable here at coppers. dale/a.k.a.hotrod cef426 cvc#64

I think you would be far better off with an RCI-2950 a lot more radio for a better price per value unit. A stock RCI 2950 will not have the power output of the S-9 but it can easily run on your 5 AMP power supply. Since you are going to be shooting through a nice beam your rated effective power will be greater then what you would get with that radio in a mobile set up with no gain. On top of that you can easily turn the RF output down low enough to properly drive your linear. In fact in stock form before peaking you can easily get your RF power on AM down to 1 watt if you want with out needing to take the cover off the radio. Not sure how Copper Aligns a radio when they expand it and align it but I would imagine getting down to 3 watt's would still be easy enough. Properly set up some of the loudest cleanest sounding base stations on AM are running 2950DX models. On top of that RCI has a excellent track record with durability of their products when you look at how many hundreds of thousands of them are sold globally compared to their failure rate! Ideally a more powerful power supply would be ideal but a 5 amp power supply at 13.5-13.8 volts should give you room for up to 67-69 watt's of output and if it is a 5 amp power supply it should have a surge rating of at least 6-7 amps. Given that you are planning to run it at 1-3 watt's to drive your amp it will have plenty of head room. Even if you where talking barefoot the best setting for a RCI-2950 is to properly align it then leave the RF power knob in 12' O'Clock so you get a nice dead key with plenty of swing. Also since you are on the side of a Mountain you will have an advantage in Gain and how far your ground signal will travel before it hits the horizon over anyone at lower elevations. Height makes might. I used to have a set up I would use when I was flying a Cessna around and at 3000-12,000 feet I talked to pretty much anyone I wanted to talk to on 4 watt radio. The electrical system in little Cessna's is not that robust so I never tried using anything that had more power then a standard 4 watt radio from the cigarette lighter in those planes. Oh and I believe everything Magnum or Stryker made are contraindicated for anything that has a driver built into the amp itself and any amp less then 4 pills preferable 2SC2879's. Their is always more then one way to skin a cat though. |

"...a 5 amp power supply at 13.5-13.8 volts should give you room for up to 67-69 watt's of output" This is untrue. 13.8 volts at 5 amps is 69 watts. The amplifier would have to be 100% efficient for that to work on FM and 300% efficient for it to work on AM. Since most of the cheap "export" amps are much less than 70% efficient, I would suggest at least a 12 amp power supply for a 50 watt RF output radio. And, that is just barely adequate. A 20 amp power supply would be better. Your radio 'Mythbuster' since 1998

welcome back. Do not put a power mic on a magnum. The stock mic is a power mic and gets it's power from pin 6, I think. These radios sound best with stock mic anyway. Also best antenna is IMAX 2000. I have used the new astro plane and r not good. Copper has everthing u need. They sell good rg 8 coax and all. That rig needs a 20 amp supply. tony/n5jva |
