I have a first gen ranger 2995DX. Here is what it does. You turn it on and it comes on slowly (about 5sec) It comes on on freq 24000. You can change the freq to anything you want and it works fine for about 5-10 min! It then sounds a "beep" and changes freq to 24890, Then when you try to get to 27mhz it won't do it. It only allows you to get 24 and 28mhz. If you turn it off for about ten min you can turn it back on and it repeats the same thing. Does anyone have any ideas? Yep - you have a problem with the mod done to make it cover 27MHz. Check all the soldering, jumper pins for one that is bad and loosing connection after the radio warms up. Tech237 N7AUS God only made some many perfect head, on the rest he put hair.

Thanks for the idea! I think you are right. With the cover off I found a jumper with three wires that a shrink wrapped together. When I touched this jumper the radio would do the error> i unplugged it and plugged it back in and so far it is doing OK! Ernie Ernie KC8YOQ Copper 123 Walkie Talkie 2NA750
