How many of you ever run accros rude and must smart attitude folks on sideband? I was trying to take advantage of a small window opening late yesterday evening. I had stations trying to get back to me and talked to a lady in Canada (27.385). I was trying out my double extended zep for the first time (first conditions of any kind). Then a really loud station came in. Everybody was really just in shadow but this guy plowed in. He would be loud then fade down, so conditions were not stable. I called him. He acknowledged me but said I was weak. I went back to him and told him he was loud at times but fading out too; that, the conditions were not that good. He then said, "that station in Tennessee sure was loud I just talked to." Then he said, people are getting off work up here and it'getting crowded and pretty much shrugged me off. Skip conditions can be strong from one area and weak from another. The use of a giant amplifer can really change things. My signal was as strong as everyone else's who was not using an amplifier. This guy amp gave him an ego and it was clear he was only going to talk to big stations. If I can hear them, I will talk to them. 73's. |

Hey Mike;
I found out long ago people with no real radio or people skills are the rudest. A real radio station and its operator are "usually" more humble. Give someone the power at hand to boom and step on others and it's like dealing with a 350 lb fullback when you only weigh 230 lbs.
How will he feel if he gets a letter from uncle?

I agree with you!
People like him hurt CB, Ham, Hot Rodding, Racing of all types and you'll even find them behind some pulpits, in the gym, at Disney World, the corner store, I think you know where this is going!

General rule of thumb has always been if you can hear them they can hear you! I would rather talk with someone in the weeds then someone booming in.....Where is the challenge in DX-ings if you only talk to strong 4000 watt stations etc.....???Kind of takes the challenge and fun out of it!
What I run into more then anything else is local's that think they own a given freq. and do not want to talk to anyone else beside their 1-2 friends. Personaly to me that is so stupid you might as well pick up a cell phone or hope on the internet if you are going to be like that! |

I finally gave up on CB here in Louisville.
The only locals I could find to talk to were on channel 39-LSB and they seemed to only get on the radio when they were drunk and obnoxious.
I mostly stay on 40m now and have had some very pleasant QSO's. Maybe 10m will open up one of these days and I will be able to talk to some of my friends in Europe.

My son is going to get is license and I am considering it too. Too much swearing and Jeery Springer like drama on CB any more. It is not like the good old days....
I can copy code I just have never sent code. When I went to flight school a life time ago we had to use code to identify radio stations that act as navigation aids for us. They had 3 letter identification in code that repeated so I just have to learn to send it in the same way you would learn to type for example.
I like to build stuff too I have built my own antenna's for about 25 years and do light repair and I mean light repair to my gear. You know replacing blown parts. So it does make sense. I just always hated the attitude most Ham's have. Most say 95% of the ones I have ran into act like cry babbies and also act like they are better then everyone else on this earth and I am not into people that think they are some how better then everyone else. That has always been the biggest turn off is the attitude that I see from most hams. I have never liked arrogant people. |

Welcome to the amateur radio hobby to both you and your son. I hope that you can experience the good side of the hobby. Code hasn’t been a requirement at least since 2005 and has ushered in a new generation of amateur operators. Although there are still great multitudes of operators that still utilize and enjoy code today.
From your post it sounds like you are accomplished in the radio hobby already. You will find many operators that are licensed amateurs as well as avid cb operators. This site is a great example of the merging of the two hobbies and I am sure that you will be welcomed here warmly.
As for people being arrogant in the amateur radio hobby I would agree that there are a few people that are resisting the transformation that amateur radio has been in for the past ten years or so. But I hope that you realize that as with nearly every hobby regardless of what it is there will be opinionated people, arrogant people, snobs, elitist, know it all types and then those who are friendly.
I for one have seen these things in several hobbies I enjoy including citizen band radio. Some of the things that you speak of in your post you will still find in amateur radio as there is still a great deal of the Jerry Springer types in the HF bands as you will see.
When I joined the ranks of amateur radio I was already in my 40s and did a great deal of listening initially before I started broadcasting. Regardless of this I still had the types that want to berate a new operator for the most minor issue as well as the operators that are willing to help. It will be a task to determine which ones are there to help and which are there for the amusement of it.
If you search the internet there are many sites that will give you guidelines on things to stay away from: for example try not to use “slang” on the amateur bands like “break” or “you are giving me nine pounds”. You would as to break into a conversation by giving your call “K_____J to group” and then wait for a reply. You may hear “This frequency is busy” if the operators are not wanting a “group” conversation. Or you may be welcomed to the frequency by the group. Sometimes Q codes are used on some frequencies more than on others. A tale tale sign of a new ham is constant use of Q codes so be careful of that as well. But try to learn the basics by searching for them on the internet.
There are many facets to amateur radio such as voice, image, text and data, Morse code (CW), slow scan television (SSTV), D-Star, Echo link, Automatic Packet Reporting System (APRS) or Packet Radio, EME or earth moon earth, OSCAR or satellite, QRP or Low Transmitter Power (under 5 watts) etc, etc. There are many different areas of amateur radio that are enjoyed but not practiced by all. Some simply utilize voice and are very content but there are others that are somewhat overzealous about it and get a little nutty. Just enjoy the hobby for what you want and let them enjoy it for what they want.
When you get your license as a tech you might have others encourage you to go on and get your general or even you extra. I tell you to do what makes you happy, it’s a hobby and you should enjoy it as you wish. Of course as long as you follow FCC rules for the most part and have fun.
So I say, welcome to amateur radio and I hope you are welcomed to your local nets. I hope to work you sometime on HF.

I'm sure you and your son will be an asset and credit to both hobbies. Beyond Sitm's advice, I would suggest two other things to ease into amateur. First is to see if there are any local groups, clubs, emergency services that have gatherings or local nets. Get to know these folks, they are usually helpful and welcoming and provide a regular outlet for communicating when the long bands are quite. The other is to listen to and participate in some of the many nets on HF. There are nets out there for all kinds of thing that are usually scheduled daily or weekly and welcome participation from anybody. A good place to start as an example of such nets are the various maratime service nets on 14.300 USB

Or if your a night owl or out side the USA then drop by at 0700 UTC for the HHH Net on 7.190 it's a worked all states (WAS)and DX net. |

Take a leap and get your General ticket...Then come and join some fine folks on 40m (7.200 MHz).
Just remember that the trouble-makers and arrogant crowd are in the minority. You can find them if you look for them, I just don't look and if I happen across them I just keep spinning the dial.

Go for the license lester elm, if you have been into CB for a few years you probably knowenough to pass easily...a night or two and your set. , just take the qrz ham tests and if your in the 90 mark your ready......
Let us know when both of you get the ticket, will say hello on the Louisville repeaters..
