I read an article in an ARRL handbook on this subject and audio clippers such as the one from cbc work great on AM but not SSB.I did not take their word for it,I checked the output of my P-400 with the clipper on and off in both modes the results were fascinating. It worked as advertized on am but the scope trace showed infinite peaks with very low average modulation on ssb.Does someone make an rf clipper. The article says it can increase the average output on ssb as much as 40%.That would be an increase from 32 to 50 watts on my eagle. |

big bob rf clipping is far more efective that audio and thr reason is simple what kills prossesing is distortson. when you do it at rf you can filter out the 2nd and 3rd harmonic products that clipping generates. As for making one it is part of your IF ( for the rf ) strip in the transmitter yes it can be done the radio handbook even has curcuits but it is not easy. The CBC and the ten-tec boards work very well for things costing less than 20 bucks but they are limited in how much they can do. bruce |
