Okay folks, I got a question about HAM licenses and ARRL books. Being I run the Lincoln that already is a 10 meter radio, and I listen a lot (nope don't talk), I've decided to dive in and get my HAM license. I've got the "Now you're talking" ARRL book but it's 1st edition from 1991. Are there any drastic changes between that and the most recent edition (4th I think?)? Also, once legal I would like to stay barefoot and run no additional power. I think this radio is only 10 watts max on ssb. Can I still get out and reach people? |

FIRST when you get your license you will be allow to run a lot more than 10 watts but with 5 watts im working europe from the car. as for the book nothing wrong with it some questions have changed check out www.qrz.com they use to as did w5yi ( www.w5yi.com) have on the net question pools.
im on 29.6 at 3:30 pm mon-fri with a central florida group of moble stations ... on our way home from work.

Alsworld, A lot has changed...
1. There is no Novice, Tech Plus, or Advanced Class license test anymore...just a written Tech, General, and Extra Class question pool, and a 5wpm code test.
2. That's right, no more 13 or 20wpm code test...Only 5wpm needed to go to the top, Extra!!!
3. This page http://www.arrl.org/FandES/ead/classes.html will explain the basic license class changes that took place April 15, 2000 that basically eliminated the Novice and Advanced license, and changed the 13 & 20 wpm code requirement to 5 wpm.
4. Also, I recommend laying aside that old outdated 1991 book you have and going to: http://www.remote.arrl.org/arrlvec/pools.html There you will find the EXACT questions you will be given on test day. You will need to pass the Technician Class written test and the 5wpm code test to get on 10 meters. And yes, your 10 watts is plenty to get on 10 meters and have lots of fun!

You might even consider the codeless tech license (should you not be ready for the 5 WPM CW test). You'd be surprised what you can work. I've worked Florida through internet linking of repeaters and worked Australia via all rf - my 440 HT into a repeater linked into 10 meters. 6 aa alkalines will get me 40 miles into any of over a dozen repeaters on 440 - and from those repeaters, well over 40 miles further to mobiles. The local megaplex repeater, however, is neat. It links 10 meters, 6 meters, 2 meters, 220 MHz, and 440 MHz. You can talk to stations on any of those repeaters through any of the other ones with no regards as to what band the other guy is on. The Aussie stations I talked with were on the 10 meter port; I was on one of the 440 ports. Of course, with the code, you will be able to use the 10 meter radio you already have. Hop in, the water is fine.

Thanks all for the info. I'm still studying around work, family, etc but I can at least listen to a lot of people and it keeps me motivated. Learning from the conversations. I've heard japan quite a bit, a few Aussies and Europe was booming last saturday morning. My wife thinks I'm making it up. Ha. I've found the 4th edition book metioned above but was on the run for something else but will get it soon. Currently using the older book working on electronic theory. I've downloaded and printed all the questions for "tech" but haven't done those as I really want to learn this stuff by the book instead of just learn the test. Electronic theory is whooping me as I guess it's just not natural for my brain but will work through it as that's one of the subjects I really want to learn and understand well. Believe me, I've come along way so far but more to do. I'm enjoying it. I'll probably get the Gordon West tapes for CW and attempt the test all at one shot. Found a local test here in April so I'll work toward that goal. From 28-28.3 I can hear lots of CW so maybe as I pick it up, the beeps will make sense. If I bomb that portion, at least I'll have a ticket (I know I'll pass the written) but I'll keep working with a goal of Tecnician with Morse code. I feel confident I'll get it.Thanks again to everyone and someday you'll hear me on the 10 meter band.
