Just wondering what this process involves and have been told a "tune-up on a radio is wasted money". The guy that said it claims a shop tpld him factories set them up for max. power. The turbo-tuned radio he got from someone else was junked and he bought a new Connex from this guy. Did he get snookered with the TT. radio or by the "tech" that he went to later. By the way the radio was a RCI 2950.

Bullseye there is only one way to tune a radio it is called STOCK. Now there are improvements that can be made to almost every radio that REALY work good example is the voltage regulator in the 2950 the audio driver, the AM detector diodes and adding a chanel guard flter. Most of these are leagual and you can do them your self. As to turbo tunning well the many unhappy postings speak for themselfs.

Mike, your gonna get a lot of opinions on this. Here's mine after many years of tuning, hacking, butchering, burning up radios, lol.
Most all radios, exports included I have hooked to my meters, have about 50% modulation, some less, from the factory or dealer. Almost all of the ones I have 'tuned', were greatly improved to a satisfactory level by fully opening the modulation adjustment, if they have one, some of the older ones needed a resistor or other part clipped. Some of the later radios do not need the clipper cut, does more damage than good. Some of the 'super mod tunes' I have tried work very good, others not so good. The true test is like your radio, if it sounds good, it needed the 'tooth' pulled, a good rule is just don't cut anything that can't be redone, or that you don't know the purpose of, I have seen people cut resistors that blew the LED channel numbers, very bad mistake there. There are some radios, like the Ranger 3500, that I could not open the VR Mod adjustment completely open, they would over-mod bad. Well, there's my winded opinion, lets hear somemore. scrapiron

Hey Mike, if you want a good radio with good power and sound you can`t beat the Voyage VR9000. Plus you will find in the back posts on this forum what to do to open it up and really make it talk with little effort. Modifications of the peaking nature are up to the owner, some radios need the extra help to make them sound like they are keeping up with the BIG radios, others just have that sound. So before other drivers or friends talk you into modifying your radio listen to it on another radio and see how it sounds, if you like it leave it alone.

Mike it really depends on if you just like a big signal, or like to be heard. I know since your a driver, you've listened to radios with a S9 signal, and could hardly hear the guy. That is how lots of 'factory' radios with stock mikes sound. Although some people buy a good radio, have it super tuned, and then put noise-canceling mikes on them, then don't talk loud or close enough to the mike. That's like buying a sports car and then installing a 50 mph governor on the motor. A noise-canceling mike does just that, cancels noises, including that noise coming otta your mouth, although in some cases, that ain't bad. This, in my opinion is a waste of money, they pay 30-50 bucks for a supertune, then 50 for that noisecancler, to get back where they started, a factory radio would sound about the same. I know if I was driving for a living, I would want a good talking and receiving radio, your not gonna find that in the cheap AM only 40 channel radios. I would consider one of the export radios, the amount of tune-up depends of each person's taste, for me, just the conversion and a simple tune is all that's needed. As you know, most drivers have standby channels off the regular band, some company drivers have a certain channel, Roadway uses 26.935 where I live, lots of drivers use lower 19, 26.735. Good luck in whatever you try. BTW, my opinion comes from installing and matching radios, amplifiers and antennas in LOTS of big rigs, not just a few from personal use. scrapiron
