I'm looking to go low power this time to safely drive an amp. It looks like a 1 pill or 2 pill driving 4 pill will work quite nice. Now does anyone know the real specs on the output power of these two radios right out of the box from copper after they "Set it up" The 2950 would be cool because I'm already familiar with the layout but It doesnt seem to have much swing(well the 2970 doesnt). The 257 seems to get awesome reviews and I can probably mount it in a more convient location. What do you guys think ? |

Splbass17, If you are just looking for a CB/10 meter radio that will allow you to talk on CB/10 meters the Magnum 257 is a great radio. But if you are looking for a "HAM" radio that will do both and offer you more HAM features, and 10/11/12 Meter coverage then there is no comparison you want the Ranger 2950. The Ranger 2950 will offer you far more standard features for the Ham Bands than the Magnum 257. ie: The new DX models have retained the operating features of its popular predecessors, including programmable repeater offset and capabilities for a CTCSS tone option — great for increasing repeater activity on 10 meters — and receiver scanning for quick search of active frequencies. The units offer three methods of frequency selection, non-volatile memory to store and scan up to ten favorite frequencies, and front panel frequency selector lockout. In addition, the DX Series offers an impressive array of design and performance improvements: — An improved receiver: designed for increased sensitivity and image rejections. — A double FET balanced mixer: for improved receiver intermodulation rejection. Thanks for the info Lon, it was helpful. I actually decided to go with the S-9. I do like my 2970dx but I'm not a ham operator and I seems to me if I'm gonna be using CB and SBB 100% of the time I should stick to a radio designed for a CB operator. You pointed that out with the comparison of the 2950 to the 257. I love that the S-9 was designed to drive a 4-2sc2879, the exact amp I've been wanting to run.Plus the reviews for the s-9 are excellent, I had to laugh how bad Galaxy was being bashed in some of the reviews. Patzerozero was going all out! Anyway I'll keep you guys posted on how the S-9 and amp work out for me. I'm excited I'm finally gonna have some power! Ohhhhh yea!! |

That S9 isn't going to drive a 4 pill box to it's maximum output. If you use your S9 to drive a 2 pill box and then drive your 4 pill box you will be ahead of the game. Don't believe all the hype about a S9 not being able to be used with a 2 pill box. The S9 is a nice radio and lot of us guys here are running them. But they aren't gonna drive that box like you think it will. Invest in a 2 pill driver for your 4 pill box or just sell it off and buy a box with a driver built in. That might be your best bet. |

Ok dale you got it. Hey Chronic, you scared me man. I sent an e-mail to Sam Lewis and he said the s-9 is for 4 pill and s-9 80 is for an 8 pill. Judging from what your saying maybe I can just use an s-9 80 to drive a 4 pill so I wont have to buy a driver |
