This may have been posted once before so sorry if it's a repeat. I myself and a lot of others have their radios on a table right next to their computer monitors. A lot of guys complain about ground static and QRM. I've found on my systems and other locals here that by changing the SCREEN REFRESH RATE on your computer from 60hertz to 70hertz seems to get rid of the interference. 60 and 80-85 make terrible interference here on my stuff. Older monitor do i have?, yes. Too close to the radios, yes Anyways, just wanting to remind people to try it. You might have to readjust your screen width and such after changing, but main thing is listen for the noise level drop. Wow must be late, i'm starting to type about anything. 73's Ty Wilson CEF#588 CVC#025 Blue Goose aka AK295 Anchorage,Alaska

Ty, Forgive if I'm misreading..are you saying the computer was causing interference on your radio? ...and if-so-fact-so you reduced with the above? Just want to be clear is all. Been trying to lose 3 units of static/ white noise for a month now. The kids are always reconfiggin' the computer to do certain games...you got my wheels turning. ***Hank CEF559*** Eastern Long Island NY

Yes Hank, the monitor was, it's an older 21" monitor that still works great so i hate to go out and buy a new one. And yes, by changing the the screen refresh rate to 70hz the white noise went away. It was driving me nuts too for the longest time untill i tried this out. Try it, hopefully it will cure your problem too Good Luck! Ty Wilson CEF#588 CVC#025 Blue Goose aka AK295 Anchorage,Alaska

Computers and the monitors attached to them have several oscillating circuits that can have harmonics upto the UHF range. Sometimes, as Akbowtie found, changing the refresh rate can help reduce the noise, as can putting chokes on BOTH ends of all cables coming out of the computer and monitor. Sometimes, the only choice is to relocate either the radio or the computer. Several years back I had my computer and monitor on the right side of my radio and had massive RFI from it on HF. During a shuffle of the shack the computer ended up to the left of the radio - the same distance away, and suddenly no RFI. All I had done was move the radio to the right end of the table and the computer to the left one. Previously they had been the other way around. |

I have also found the screen resolution makes a noticable difference in backround noise. For my setup 1152 X 864 resolution is the magic setting. It dropped the backround noise 2 S units. Corn Dog CEF #820 |
