I'm looking for a new base station and was wondering which I should go with. I have a Cobra 89GTL right now but I want something more up to date. I would like to stay around the $300.00 range. I'm leaning toward the 696FSSB. What do you think?

CBblackbeard, I have been keeping my eye on that exact radio. I like it due to all the features, looks, plus the weather bands, and the best part on the weather is you select the channel that you want, versus the scanning kind. I have yet to see one with scanning feature that works good. Voice of experience on that one. Anyway, I am considering that radio for the base. I only have two now, so I do not see any reason why I can't have a good one like that to go with the other ones. Let me know if you get it. Here I keep wanting to buy that radio, and I still don't have my antenna up. HOWEVER, I did buy two copper rods today for the grounding. Next will be the wiring that goes from the rods to the pole. Maybe by springtime I will get my antenna up. Let me know which route you go. From the standpoint of options of brands of CB base stations, there are only three that I am aware of, the one above, the Galaxy base, and the Cherokee base. The TR has both the others beat, in my opinion. but, just let us know which road you go down. If anyone knows of another brand or model of a NEW base station on CB, not export radios that can be converted, I would like to know. Thanks.

Thanks Keith. I was also considering the Galaxy 2517 and the 2547, but I heard alot of bad things about the 2547. I have a cheap antenna right now but I will be getting the IMAX 2000 soon. I agree with you on the looks of the TR, plus it has everything that I'm loking for. I want to find out as much as I can about this radio and If I hear mostly good things I'll probably buy one in the next three weeks. Let me know if you get one before that.

Well, We own and use 2 of the TR696F base's (both from Copper) and have used them on the CEF Net's since they started and use them on a daily basis and have had NO problems with them in over 1 1/2 years.

We always get good Clear and Loud Modulation Reports on the Net's even 100% Barefoot.

Very good radio, also easy to mod for extra channels if you choose.

Weather bands are a plus as well as the weather warning that will flat wake you up no matter in the house you are at.

It will sound whenever the weather service issues a warning weather the Radio is ON or OFF. Another Nice Feature.

It also has a Good Variable talk back if you like or use it.

For Amp use we have one set at 2 watts swinging 6 watts. Works great with the KLV1000.

Overall I would give it a 10.

THe 1st Sargant runs the Silver Salute Desk Mic with hers and we have a power hand mic PT452 on the other one.

Mic gain all the way open on radio and barely open on mics.

Bright RED LED's easy to see even from across the room on Channel Display and Freq Counter.

Good Clear / Bright easy to see (White Light's) SWR & WATT Meter.

HomeBoy CEF #159 also uses the TR696F & Silver Salute I orderd from Copper for him on the CEF Nets on Sunday morning's and he LOVE's his.

We would Highly Recommend them to anyone looking for a Good Easy to Use & Reliable Base Radio.

Just our 2 cent's worth on the TR696F SSB Base.

Lon Tech808 & Shirley 1st Sargant

Foxracing, do you have a Galaxy cb base station?

In meantime, CBblackbeard, you will get one before me. Unfortunately, I had to lay the money down for a new cell phone for work. The company requires us to have them, but won't pay for the phone, just the monthly bill. So the money I was saving up to buy one, is now gone, and starting all over. Maybe by springtime, if I am lucky!! I am glad to hear a report about them from someone who has one, or in this case, two. When I get one, I have a D 104 that I bought from Copper, still sitting here collecting dust, maybe it will get put to good use. Thanks.

Keith;
I owned a 2517DX which is a great radio. I opted for a Lincoln for the base. I feel better SSB. I now use two radios for base. A Lincoln for SSB and a Connex 4800DXL for AM. Don't ask why, I just like the arrangement.

Troublemaker, did you get your radios expanded to go above and below cb? If so, how high and low can you go?

Thanks,

Thanks guys, a friend of mine has the 696f has and that thing has modulation to spare. Anyone not going on up into 10 meters would be served well by this radio.

Ah yes Mike. But will it out perform my old 40 channel Lafayette Telstat SSB 140? No, nothing has been done to my radio, just stock radio.

I know that Texas is a fine radio in all seriousness. Heard too many compliments about that base station.

Just had to cut up with you though.

The TR696 SSB Basestation is a fine radio. Always get good reports. I was so pleased with the RCI/Texas Ranger line that I went out and purchased a RCI 2980 WX. I love this radio.

Excellent with DX & TX.

I've had my 696 ssb for a year now and finally got everything set up the way i want it...imax at 56' at the base, new feed line, jumpers and all. Excellent reports all around! Clean, crisp and loud audio and all that with the stock mic on it. I was going to change it out, but after i talked on it the reports were too good. Will wait till it dies to replace. Love this radio!!

Late post on this one but I've been in Hatteras fishing. Like Lon & Shirley we have a 696F here that we have been running for over a year. I have more radios then anyone should (ask my wife!) and this is the workhorse that gets used day in and out. Betty will use it without a fight cause it is easy to operate. I like it cause the audio is excellent on both AM & SSB. Sensitivity is good and being a charter capt. I love the weather feature. Best of all and unlike many other radios I have bought in the last five years this one has been problem free. I started in this hobby in 1975 and have seen the good, the bad, and the ugly! This radio will not disappoint. 73's

I have "NEVER" had a single problem with my Texas Ranger 696F SSB base radio since I got it back in 2004.

Lon/Tech808 set it up like he has listed in the Modification List under Tools to the Left of the forum here.

And I have had it on and used it every single day.

I had the 696FD1 pro the same inside and it worked great for years and was easy to modify.

I sold it now and wish I had it back.

If I can find a new or good used 696f base I will buy it in a second.

I believe they are out of producting now. what a shame.

Blackbeard, I have a 2547 I got from copper a coupla years back and I haven't got anything bad to say about this radio. I've been at it for at least forty or so years an this is one of the best mid-priced bases I have ever seen. I'd sure take it anyday over them old cobra 2000 gtl bases that everybody thinks are so good.....
