What type coax would you recommend for 11M use only? No longer run than 75ft.

I would use at least RG-213 BUT as I have said several times use the best coax you can afford. Yes it will cost more now but save you money later.

hello, for a 50'to 75' run to a A99 would rg8x mini8 be ok? and is rg213 bigger or smaller than rg8u.also when ordering PL259s are they all the same or different for mini8,rg8u,or 213? thanks much...shredder

Shredder,

For a run of 50' to 75' my 1st choice would be: Altelicon CA-400 and my 2nd choice would be RG213.

For PL259 connecters there is a difference in quality and materials between many manufacturers. Personally I only use and recommend the PL259 connectors and coax reducers if needed from Copper.

Ok thanks Lon, i am happy to get some advice from you or anyone on this copper forum.havnt had very many chances to ask a tech or any one who makes sense. seems like you and the rest of the guys know what youre talking about.ive been doing a lot of reading on here the last few weeks trying to figure some stuff out. figure i might as well start asking! i have been into cb's for the last thirty yrs on and off with no real good advice.a lot of what i know is self taught trial and oops and here we go again with swr. i seem to be a high swr magnet i have won a few battles im nobody to give advice.my rci 2950 decided that it didnt like my high swr and now will only recive and no transmit. the guy i took it to says the microprocesor is fried and my old cobra base that will run on 12 volts sounds garbled everyone says another victum of swr. i have collected a lot of stuff over the years but this year i became disabled and nolonger want to deal with old problems. so im going to go with new stuff i bought a new 148gtl,12amp power supply and i have 2 15 amp that are a few yrs old.and a new k40 for my truck, im planning on getting a A99 and a galaxy959 for the basement. i have an old texas star v mod and a blue thunder 250 am/ssb. i have thetop ten feet of an old tower, planning on 20'of thick condoit or the black water pipe? a copper coated ground rod and putting a lightning arrestor at the a99 do i run the wire to the rod only and do i want 4 or 6 solid or stranded copper. if there is another way to do this or ground it from tower to rod instead of arrestor please let me know.. i was hopeing to get by with the mini8 for cost and i only will have at the most 250 watts later on. i will probably just run my v mod mostly. i like the blue thunder in my truck.. so do i have a good plan or does it need improvement once again thanks... Shredder, The mini 8 will work just fine but it is not as durable and does not hold up to weather like the heavier stuff. The idea is not to have to go and replace the coax very often. RG213 does not cost much more than the mini 8 and Copper carries some good rg213. I only use Amphenol pl259 connectors. If you go with mini8 you need the reducers that screw into the pl259. Rg213 is thick so no need for reducers. For ground wire 8 gauge solid copper will work but the bigger the better, keep your grounds wires SHORT. Install lightning arrestors as the instructions say or at least low enough so you can reach it, not at the antenna cause you have to ground the arrestor. Use the ground rod and an arrestor or perhaps a polyphaser.
Good luck with your install and I hope any info I provided was helpful. Anything else you need to know we will be glad to help. 73

Helpful you bet. thanks kenny..so i can run a jumper from ant to a few ' from the grass. then ground over to the rod? 2' away from tower sound good?that would be about a 2'ground wire. i have some pieces of real thick stranded thicker than battery cable was leftovers from work used for 440 volts -big 500 h motors. but if solid is better thats not a problem. i was told to run solid from the arrestor at the ant. not only would that be expencive but wrong info..also sounds like the other info about my 2950 was wrong.dont know what a polyphaser is i'll try to find some info on that.. thanks again kenny..and bruce ~SHREDDER~ (lee) CEF1002 east central wisconsin

If you can go with solid ground wire you should. Solid is better than stranded for scientific reasons that I really do not know much about other than the fact that electricity travels on the outside of a conductor, not actually inside of it.
2 feet should be fine. You keep the ground wires short because the longer they get they will try to radiate like the antenna. So for 11 meters an 8'1/2 foot ground wire would cause problems.

ok solid it is,and bare correct? so if i were to keep the arrestor at the top and run from there it would be a problem, and im guessing if i ran arrestor to pole or tower at top it would be bad also?tower and pole would radiate? ill run coax to bottom near dirt then put arrestor in line... do i also want to ground the tower at the base if so 1 or all 3 legs?? sorry to be such a pain! just dont get the grounding thing..i used to have a big stick- like the a99 on a pice of 5' pipe up a tree tied to a branch no grounds at all just unplug coax and aim it away from house when storms around. ill still un plug at arrestor even if i get grounding figured out dont want it getting in the house cant afford a polyphaser.. sorry for long post and thank you for your advice and time----shredder~

NO DON'T USE SOLID CONDUCTORS FOR GROUND WIRE.. Solid is not better for RF grounds, use a braided strap for RF grounds.

This is because at RF most of the current flows on the outter surface of the conductor, which means on a solid conductor very little of it is actually used. This increase resistance to the current flow. If you use a braided strap, you have more surface area being used, which in turn reduce the resistance to that flow. We need this lower resistacne to improve the efficiency of the ground connection.

Ok ...once again im greatful for any advice ...but now im getting realy confused!! maybe ill just put it up with no grounds for the winter..not much lightning in wisconsin during winter...is arrester at top idea i have correct about the tower acting like ant.and will it do the same if i ground the tower at bottum? i have some thick with many smaller wires if that should be better than the 1 or 3 wires thick should i strip it? the stuff at the store-solid 1-3wires twisted together #4 or 6 groundig wire(i assume for tv's) is bare? well now that im lost ill go back to my k40 probs 3 days so far swr-1.2 on 1 1.4 on 40 AWI on all 40. put on a different ant. no AWI maybe k40 is junk. goin to go pull some hair out!! thanks ~shredder

Shredder,
It's simple - rf current flows on the surface of the wire, therefore if you increase the surface area by using braided strapping, you will reduced resistance to the flow of current (a thicker wire has less resistance than a thin wire). Reduce that resistance and any ground current will have less trouble in reaching ground.

OK,braided is better..kinda got that when i seen do not use solid wires for rf ground.as for puting the arrestor at the top with a long ground wire or at bottom with short wire ..i'll just experiment with it.so i dont have to keep asking. thanks for the help, maybe one sunday i'll have some good dx conditions!! thanks guys.. ~SHREDDER CEF1002 E.CENTRAL WISCONSIN
