Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) is a high-precision atomic time standard which approximately tracks Universal Time (UT). It is the basis for legal civil time all over the Earth: time zones around the world are expressed as positive and negative offsets from UTC. In this role it is also referred to as Zulu time (Z), or using the term "Greenwich Mean Time" (GMT).
COORDINATED UNIVERSAL TIME (UTC) = ZULU TIME - CONVERSION CHART
RED numbers are your local clock times.
GREEN numbers are the UTC or ZULU time in each respective time zone.
LEGEND:
EDST = EASTERN DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME
EST = EASTERN STANDARD TIME
CDST = CENTRAL DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME
CST = CENTRAL STANDARD TIME
MDST = MOUNTAIN DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME
MST = MOUNTAIN STANDARD TIME
PDST = PACIFIC DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME
PST = PACIFIC STANDARD TIME
EXAMPLE: If your local clock reads 8 PM and you are in the Eastern Daylight Savings Time (EDST) time zone, the UTC or ZULU time would be 2400 hours. (Note: 2400 hours = 0000 hours)

Um, and the reason it's "UTC" and not "CUT" is that the treaty setting it up is administered by an agency in France. Thus the 'official' name "Universelle Temp Coordinee'"
Odd how many international treaties are written in French.
Oh, and Greenwich, England is no longer on "Greenwich" time. England switched to European Standard Time a few years back, to make life easier on businesses' operating hours, between Europe and England.
UTC is a world standard, but no longer the 'local' standard for Greenwich.
