I would like to know if there is a amp that would work good with my stock 148 GTL Cobra. 4 watt mobile. I don't want to have the radio turned down. I kinda like the KL and Palmoar amps. Any help would be appreciated. |

a better chance of an amp working well & not needing to touch the radio would POSSIBLY be a texas star dx250-350-400. the palomar will probably be OK, from what i've seen, some KL's prefer a dead key closer to 2 watts. |

I have the KL 200p. My uncle has 2 KL-400s. We both been running about 3 1/2 watts DK into them with no trouble and even his KL400 on position 6 is not fuzzy. Remains clear. Both of our radios are swinging about 7-8 watts PEP. I suppose a lower DK would be better, but, my amp is on all the time and i've never had a problem. My friends have Texas Star Amps and they are very nice and work great! |

Search for "W90" on the main page, it will show all the amps. |

hawkeye, i would go with the KL300p. its a great deal, and will give lots of bang for the buck. you can run it with your stock 148gtl. as long as it really is stock from the factory, and not "put back" to stock by some tech. if its stock from the factory, you can by sure that it is not putting out more than 4 watts, and most likely is only putting out 3 to 3.5 watts. the reason people will tell you not to run an amp like this is because you will tend to sound nasal and muffled because the amp has no "breathing room" left for when you talk. it is already near max because of the deadkey. if i were you id just turn down the deadkey inside the radio, as its very simple and can be done without even a wattmeter, but i understand if you dont want to. if you change your mind i'd be glad to walk you through it. good luck, matt |

Its really a good idea to have the 148 GTL peaked and tuned by a qaulified tech to operate an amp to its best performance. I run a 148 GTL with a Texas Star dx500v and Predator 10K antenna, radio deadkeys 2 watts. This combo works great and sounds awesome! |

An amp with 2 2879's or 4 1446's would be perfect. |
