I think my power supply in the radio took the proverbial dump, all of a sudden the radio just turned off, fuse not blown, got the uh oh smell, no smoke or anything, anyone know if I can jump it and feed it with an external power supply, if so how? I have a big enough power supply to run it without a problem. Rich |

Rich that sont sound good at all ! but you can hook it up to a externat power supply but it would take a monster to keep it running full power ! i know a guy who took his 2990dx and modded it to use in his truck (semi) and you talk about loud ! ! its kinda funny cause i know who has the BIG radio in his truck ! LOL

Pig,find the total watts consumption in your owners manual, while in tx mode, divide that number by 13.8 and it will give you a ball park figure for a supply in amps,a power supply of 25 amps would be minimum,IMO.Bigbob |

Thanks Big Bob, and gator, I have an astron 35 I was gonna try with it, do I just clip it to the wires coming out of the radio power supply, or somewhere else? Never opened it up before, so bear with me! Rich |

Unhook the supply wires coming out of the supply board that go to the rf amp and main board and connect to external supply you'll need a schematic and be VERY careful.Bigbob |

The internal power-supply regulator has a row of pins on the front-facing edge of its circuit board. The two pins nearest the center of the radio are the regulated outputs. The orange one goes to the front-panel power switch, and from there to the main radio board. The smaller, red wire goes into the linear shield box. You will need to pull BOTH these wires and feed them BOTH from the positive side of your external regulated supply. You can hook the negative side to a ring lug under one of the screws on the two big, fat filter caps. The black wires on those are the negative side. Just be content (won't suggest "happy") that your internal supply didn't fail "shorted". When this happens, the voltage fed to the radio and linear jumps up to around 24 Volts. Makes the front panel lights REALLY bright, but not for long. That kind of failure will fry nearly everything in the radio, unless you punch the power button OFF pronto. The built-in supply has NO over-voltage protection. 73

Rich, I'm interested, let us know if you get it back up and running on a 35 amp. supply. I don't have one of these radios, but if it works I'll put it in my notes. |

my 2990 did the same thing but cut off in the middle of a tansmission im thinking its the supply voltage regulators on the back of the radio. it blew a resistor as well r112 and smoked the transistor vol reg near it i hope thats all it is
