Please give opinions on the TR-296. I would like an inexpensive "type accepted" sideband mobile, and this seems to be one of Copper's cheapest. I understand Galaxy has a drifting problem. I have read in an old post that the 296 uses the same or simular board as the old Cobra 148, is this good or bad ? Thanks, Dan |

Hey Dan For a SSB radio I would go for the Uniden Grant They are good radios and have a reputation for being built well! Good luck BC |

Very nice radio. Simple and effective. With a power mike and turning up the modulation pot will give good audio. If you have a couple of extra bucks you might look into an export SSB radio such as a Magnum 257..little more output and even better on SSB. I'm moving back to Washington at the end of Sept there Dan..hope to hear you on the air. |

The Grants are nice, trouble is they are discontinued and getting hard to find new. The Tr-296 is pretty much the next best thing as far as type-accepted SSB CB's go. Ranger has started making the 296F model again, with the 5 digit frequency counter. That's nice if you decide to expand it's frequency coverage. |

I have to go along with the Grant oppinions also. The Grants are still out there. Just because they were discontinued doesn't mean that they became scarce over nite. The TR-296 that you are refering to is suppose to be a copy of the early Cobra-148 that was built in the Phillipines. The best Cobra's came out of there back when Uniden was building them. In my personal oppinion, I would take a TR-296 long before I would ever take one of todays new Cobra-148s. They just are not the radio they use to be. Jeff Tech548 |

I've had my TR296 since January of this year and haven't had a single problem with it. |

We have had our TR-296 for a couple of years now and it has always performed GREAT!. We been very Happy with ours. It is a good reasonably priced radio that performs well on AM & SSB. The overall performance hss been equal to and sometimes above the Uniden Grant XL's that we have owned over the years. The front panel design is the exact same as the Grant XL ie: (knobs / functions / location) Lon Tech808 |

Thanks for all your comments. I e-mailed Ranger and they confirmed that they are discontinuing the TR-296 line. Since Copper still has the TR-296GK in stock, I ordered one before they ran out. Brewdirect, you will arrive just in time for non-stop rain (remember why you moved?) Welcome back |

I personaly liked the Grant LT also, have had them all...the old 148's were great AM ers, and very fun to add all them extra features and mods...these new 296 just don't have the punch that some of us like...but a ok radio for the price. |
