Dale, I would find a radio with a good NB and ANL that are seperate. My 148 is realgood for filtering noise. Also my Connex 4800 does an excellent job filtering. I think Maco has a preamp that has a signal to noise filter with a varible adjust to your likeing.
Best thing to do is try to stop the noise at its source. Being that transformers are your trouble you may have to move your antenna.

i shopped connex 4800dxl vs rci6900ftb before deciding on the S9 nearly 2 years ago. i found their receivers to be strangely different (for the better) vs their (step?)brother, the 95t. the S9 i purchased(without hearing 1st) turned out to be decidedly quieter, & more sensitive then the 4800/6900, rivaling my slightly modded grant xl. in base operation, i'd give the S9 a very slight nod, in the mobile, the xl-possibly because i'm more familiar with external adjustments to make the noises that can't be blanked out more bearable. i have found my (original version)delta force to be extremely sensitive, though with a bit more white noise then i'd like. though i did find an ANL/NB problem, corrected it & now have a much improved white noise situation. 2 recent new, blue omega forces may even be better then my S9. the (now discontinued) texas ranger 296's as well as general shermans i've touched are very close in performance to the old xl/lt's.

i'm assuming you're talking about the power company's pole mounted transformers? a friend sold his ft1000, along with some other equipt due to the noise coming from the 1 in his front yard. after obtaining his ham license, he made about a dozen complaint calls, making them aware he was a licensed ham, they would call him up after each attempt to fix the problem & ask if there was any improvement. they asked about time of day, weather conditions, type of noise, variations of noise on different freqs, & sent numerous repair crews & techs to assess the situation, until it finally WAS resolved.
