My Uniden Grant XL does a superb job on receive with the 2SC-2999 mod. and this mod. has not, I repeat has not had anything what so ever to do with the static level, the mod. quieted a lot of the low level back ground noise. And some low level signals that were almost unreadable before the 2SC-2999 mod. was done, were brought up to a readable signal. |

For those doing a search about this radio on this forum it is not made anymore. If you can get your hands on a XL or LT preferably untouched do so. You will not find a better CB radio in terms of performance on both AM, SSB and receive than these two. IMHO these radios with time will go the route of the Cobra 2000 base station bringing in good shape nice money on E-bay.

Yankee..please explain the 2SC-2999 mod? I have but one Grant XL and been slowly bringing it back to it's original (visual) glory. Out of all the radios I've had (have) it's the loudest one DK-ing 2 and swinging 10. I've had (and have) bigger radios but that Grant is the goods! I'd love to get a bigger swing and modulation out of it. As of now only have Q24 nipped from the previous owner. Semi-off topic my 148GTL is also undergoing "resoration" to like new condition as I hunt parts...also a very good talker and little brother to the Grant...the way I look at it anyway Hank '905 CEF 559 |

Hank,I emailed what I have on the 2SC2999,Let me know if it's big enough print for you to read. It takes a lot of radio for me to say this is my mainstay radio. I own 2 ham rigs and have owned a Cobra 2000 GTL and many other Uniden sideband radios, still own several older upd-858 PLL Uniden made sideband radios. Let them say what they will but my mainstay radio and the one that CEF members say is super loud on the air is a Uniden Grant XL with a Silver Eagle microphone. Carl CEF-357 |

905-go to: ask the tech>>>radios base>>>cobra 2000 modulation mods, the last post being 3/23/05, then scroll down to my post 3/21/05 10:43 AM. it lists MOST of the mods that can be done to the 2000/148/XL/LT/TR296/radio shack/cherokee & whoever else may have copied that radio. it not only includes power & modulation mods, but receiver mods including what to do with the transistor you remove to replace with a 2sc2999...i heard you 40 miles, in my mobile, thru the noise, 1/2 of that was your transmit, 1/2 my receive |

hey pat, i just posted those mods in the MY 2000GTL thread in Ask The Tech. and you can rest assured that i gave you proper credit. i ended up doing everything you listed except removing R166. i didnt like the way the radio acted with it removed. everything else works great! you sure were right about the receiver mods! and i thought it sounded good before i did them. anyone reading this can trust these mods, if done correctly, they work great. its all about how you want your radio to sound. matt |

Not sure if copper sells them but I've seen chrome replacements EVERYWHERE...CB shops and them there auction sites. Remember that Cobra148GTL and other DX size radios have the same case as well. If you don't like the chrome then scuff them up and rattle can them semi-gloss black. AS for the faceplate you'll have to hunt for a parts rig. TRy yer local cb shops..I found a NEW NOS all original Grant XL faceplate (W/plastic cover!) and new chrome bezel that went with it for $20 on the auction site. Other than that there are a few companies out there producing aftermarket stickers to cover your worn out original. Good luck with the hunt! Hank '905 CEF559 |

Mine is the old style Uniden Grant made in the Philippines with the 6 knobs on the left hand side of radio. I had it tuned and 3 extra bands of 40 channels added, Clarifier unlocked and a 6 digit frequency counter hard wired into it. It is the best sounding of my cb radio's and would sell my wife before selling it, but don't tell her I said that. |

Robert, On a Grant XL you would want to keep in original, as Hank has said, go to some of the CB shops and see what they have in the junk box. There all several radios that have the same case and control knob lay out. the only differance on the case of the original Cobra 148 GTL and the Grant XL is that the face plate of the Grant XL has rounded corners and the 148 is square corners. Myself I don't know how these radios get beat up in the first place. My personal Grant XL is close to six years old and still looks new, but I take care of it and keep it looking new. Carl CEF-357 |

Murray, I have several of the older Uniden sidebanders which you speak of with the UPd-858 PLL and two of them which are mobiles, the Cobra 138 XLR and the Realistic TRC-449 as old as they are, look as though they have just come from the box new. Now and then you can find a jem condition older sideband radio. I collect the older UPd-858 sideband radios. And as yet, I'm still hunting the Grant which you have in like new condition for my collection. 73, Carl Cef-357 |

Carl, I was extremely lucky to get the Grant and the guy who sold it to me through in a Realistic TRC453 (Uniden PC122) clone for an extra $30usd. Both radio's have been excellent value. Both have been tuned and extra bands added. On my pep reading Yaesu meter the Realistic swings to 28 watts and the Grant to about 20 watts |

Yes Bruce I just looked at the receipt for it and it was done. This is one real stable radio and a real pleasure to use, just have to get another silver eagle to compliment the D104 hand mic, back to ebay again. I have finally learnt that sometimes buying secondhand is better value than buying new especially as far as one particular brand of radio is concerned funnily enough it has five letters in the name. This collecting and modifying radio's gets addictive. |

I've got one of those original Uniden Grants as well. Not too good cosmetically, but it works well. Still stock at this point, but I hope to get time to mod it someday. I had a older 148GTL (stock too) but just sold it to my buddy. He wants me to mod it before he takes it home. Also have a TRC449 that I've heard is the same chassis as the Grant and 148. I expanded it several years ago, and it's always been a good radio too. Actually, I've got a bunch of older sideband mobiles, including an AR144, a Palomar SSB500, and a couple of different Roadtalkers (a slant-face base/mobile and a regular mobile). Been thinking about selling them all off tho, and getting a couple more Rangers. Having a freq counter built-in is so much more convenient than having to memorize a freq chart. |

First model Grant and TRC-449 are the same. But the 148 is the newer chassis. Older Grant and TRC-449 have the uPD 858 PLL chassis. If your Grant doesn't look very much like the 148, it's the first model. |
