Tech 833. In your personal opinion what do you believe is a few of the best TVI filter that will handle the legal limit? If so could you list a few of them? Thanks, Don |

Don I know you posted for Tech 833, but I'll give you my thoughts...I own Oak Bay, Bencher and Kenwood. I like all as far as quality but my Oak Bay is primo in my opinion. |

tech808 has a post on here somewhere where he shows a pic of the low pass filters that he uses. i think he got the recommendation from tech833. try searching for low pass filter. i have always used a drake low pass filter. you can buy them at the auction site. i love them. there is a review in QST magazine about the current line up of filters, and i think that nye-viking won. hope this helps matt |

Need some help again guys. I have a 500 watt TVI problem. Now I know 500 watts is illegal but I'm trying to do this right and stop tvi. I own a huge low pass filter made by Nye Viking. Hook ups are like this; radio, 1 foot jumper, amp, 1foot jumper, low pass filter to antenna. It is not working to solve TVI! Now I researched a little and I wonder...Should I attach the filter directly to the rear of the amp with a double male adapter and right angle adapter? It will make the two pieces as one unit. Will this possibly work the correct way. Just wanted to ask before I go and buy some adapters or a new filter. I also have been told that Nye Viking is one of the best filters ytou can get. This filter is a round cylinder 2 inches wide and 9 inches long! If it dont work what will? On radio probation for now. CEF491, Kenny |

Hi Don. I am sorry, I just NOW found your post. I prefer the Bird harmonic filters, but would pick Bencher as a second choice. |

are you sure that nye viking is a low pass filter and not a common mode filter? i only ask because the way you describe it, it sounds like a common mode filter ive seen before. otherwise it sounds like you have everything hooked up right. hows your grounding situation? is the interference only to TV's in your house? any other equipment affected? cable, satellite, or rabbit ears? give me some more details and i might be able to offer more advice. matt PS, the nye viking did very well in the latest QST test. |

Also, did you use a high pass filter behind the tv? They're cheap, and you can use more than one. What kind of antenna are you using? I've found some are better than others. The gp antennas with the radials usually help better than a straight stick. |

Well guys I still have problems. My voice can be heard over the tv. Now its not every tv channel. In my own home BTW. Cable channel 59 is the worst and its the middle channels centered at channel 20 on the radio. I get bars on the radio room tv. The filter does say low pass filter on it. My VSWR got lower so no radio worries. The radio is a Connex 4800. No mods or clipped parts only an alignment and Dead key adjustment was made fresh out of box.Using an Astatic noise canceling mic. Amp is a new TS 500 from Copper. Coax is mini 8 , jumpers are mini 8. I soldered all pl-259 ends on myself so I know that job is done well.Lets see..what else? Oh antenna is Imax 2000 on 30 ft pushup pole clamped to chainlink fence pole. BTW my antenna appears to be attached to an undetermined many miles of chain link fence, hhmmmmm???? 3 guy wires. Two 8foot copper clad ground rods attached with four pieces of 0ne ft long #2 weld cable. Now that I think about it....My coax does cross over rg59 cable tv coax on outside of house but not touching. Jellybean I'm on my way to buy a high pass today. This morning I did find an unused, live tv coax in one of the rooms. I cut of the connector, vinyle taped it, heat shrink tubed it and capped it with an antenna weather cap. Hopefully this will stop any possible leak. My neighbor will and has in the past let me know if I cause any inkling of a disturbance. Since grounding my antenna and using my new amp fromm Copper I have not heard from her. Hopefully this is just a front end overload and in my own house. One more note. Since using the filter the telephone bleed has went away!! |

Get a handheld scanner.Tune it to 145.25 mhz and start walking around looking for a leak in cable. Rich |

You need to properly terminate the unused coax with a 75 ohm terminator, and all other unsued ports on splitters, etc. The grounding for the cable system needs to be up to par also, do you have a CATV grounding block outside your home? CATV usually solves bleed problems, it was much more prevalent when every home had a TV antenna. The CATV coax should certainly keep that junk out! Chad

hotwire, it sounds like the radio set up is up to par. you should think about adding a ground rod righ outside of the shack for your equip. if that's feasable. the only other thing that i can think of would be if you didnt use an insulator on your guy wires to keep them from resonating. but really, i think the problem lies with your cable set up. you wouldnt believe the problems that a loosely screwed in connector can cause. if you are using ANY jumpers that came with a piece of equip., get rid of them now!!! those jumpers are the biggest pieces of crud ever! there is barely even a shield on them! buy the crimping tool, get some good quality 75ohm coax, some ends, and make your own jumpers. i bet your problem goes away as soon as you get rid of the cheap jumpers if you have any. good luck, matt |

KV!! Bingo! Nasty cheap jumpwire replaced with quad shield jumper and high pass filter reduced like 90 percent bleed. Still get some lines though. I asked both nieghbors if any trouble and they said no. Although old lady across street with hand on hip waving index finger at me and antenna said I better watch it! he he he Shes a nice old lady and I best not mess up her Jerry Springer and soaps! So I went back in and while talking I adjusted dial a watt back only a qaurter away and problem totally diapeared. So I think its just an overload problem now. BTW not using low pass because it reall dont seem to help. Do export mobiles have low pass filters inside like the ham rigs? Thanks for all the help guys!! I owe ya one! CEF491 Kenny |

not sure on the export low pass thing. they may have a harmonic suppressor in them of some sort, but you can bet it's not very good. glad to help. that was the case here too. if it were me, id run the low pass filter as a just in case. (like if the cable goes out for the whole neighborhood for a day) if its a good one, there shouldnt be any noticable insertion loss. either way, im glad you got rid of the RFI. its a real pain to deal with. matt |

I'd run the filter too. I run one, never had problems before it but I figured as a kind neighbor, what's 30 bucks to prevent problems. That and I KNEW the galaxy I was using would throw harmonics!it does not decrease signal strength and just sits there hidden behind the stuff. Chad |
