Pep (Peak envelope power) measures modulation audio peaks on sideband transmissions. RMS (Root mean square) measures the dead key, or carrier in voltage, for Amplitude modulation (AM). Example: a stock Cobra 148, dead keys 4 watts rms AM, swings to 12 watts pep on sideband. Did I ace that question, or what? Wolverine. |

RMS ~ (RMS) power is found by averaging the instantaneous power output over a long period of time, so it is actually the average power or mean power. PEP ~ Peak Envelope Power (PEP) is the average power supplied to the antenna transmission line by a transmitter during one radio frequency cycle at the crest (PEAK) of the modulation envelope, under normal operating conditions.
