Are the uniden pc68xl and the cobra 25 the exact same radio? If so can I use the mods for the cobra 25 on the uniden pc68xl? I want to change the final to a 2SC1969 for more output. If the are diffrent radios then do you have a mod procuder to change the final in a uniden pc68xl? |

just open up vr5 all the way for modulation, and peak it out. Get 16 watts or so and be done. If you want more power than that buy an amp. It doesn't have to be a big one. If you put a new final in it's a lot of work and a pain in the rear if you ask me. You can get a small amp for 30 or 40 bucks. Like the kl40, its 30 or 40 bucks and you get about 40 watts out of it. Just my opinion though |

the pc68xl and the pc66xl have the same boards so the mods for the 66 will work for the 68 as for the 25 I believe they are the same but not positive but ya can put the 1969 final in but if you don't put in a new driver i don't think you will get much more out of it i cant remember the #for the driver. I had a 29ltd that had the driver and final changed to these and put 25w out the back of the radio I was pleasently surprised and pleased good luck on your mods |

not sure what you mean by using vr 25? go to the left of this forum and click on modification list under tools and follow the rest and it will take you to the modifications for this radio. |

hello mudducksoup. the easiest way i know is to get a 5w 51 ohm carbon resistor from r.f.parts, solder one lead into the pl-259 center pin (screw the outer shell back on), then solder the other lead to the pl-259 body. this is good enough for basic single final radios for short checks. (2 100ohm 2w resistors in parallel for 4w capability). for more power, another simple one is to get 20 1kohm 2w resistors (from some mail order company), 2 10" pieces of 1/4 inch or smaller copper tubing from your local hardware store, and solder each resistor to the tubing in a ladder like configuration, spacing them about 1/2" apart. solder the center conductor of some rg-8x to one pc of tubing and the shield to the other pc of tubing keeping the coax leads as short as reasonable but allowing for movement (of course a pl-259 on the other end of coax). now you have a good 40w dummy load to take on all of the tuning any dual 1969/2312 radio can dish out. i started using these (and others i made) in the 70's to tune up, check coax, adj swr on dual antennas etc, still have them and they work fine. hope this helps. |

Cheap and easy Talkback. Open the bottom of your Cobra/Uniden radio. Solder a small thin wire from the neg side of the speaker to DC ground...chassis should work fine. If it's too loud then put a 100ohm resistor inline or experiment with different values.Rat shack has them all for a few pennies. If your handy put a variable pot outside the radio to control your talkback volume. Too loud and she WILL squeal! May have to use your mic gain to lower it or use the stock mic. As far as I know this only works on Cobra and Uniden radios. You can do this OR buy an external "talkback" speaker with vol. control. Good Luck! Hank '905 CEF 559 |

Soder a 68pf to 100pf disc cap across C62 and you can get a better carrier.i personaly would go for an 8 watt carrier with forward swing if you can and you will add 1 s-unit to the radio recieveing you.And all the swing things are gimmicks what good is modulation with nothing to carry it? right. |

GREAT!! good to hear its working. My friend is giving me a Gold cobra 29 for free i cant wait im going to install the 1969/1957 finals and try to get the carrier up to 8.0 watts and get about 80% modulation he says it has a connex board and it might have the expo kit.So i take it VR2 was the right VR? I hope to hear you on the iar sometime.I am going to use the 29 in my truck and buy a ssb model for the house and throw up an A99 about 20 or 30 feet.I might invest in a 100 watt bacon frier to and run that on the base. Why does the radio need re-aligned? is it off frequency? I was at the local wal-mart (MONOPOLY) store and seen they have the pc68 for 79.96 seems a little high but maybe since its uniden its better than a cobra 25. Are you going to do the final mod on your 68? I personaly like having SSB on a radio but in the truck i just run channel 19 mostly. |

Actually, when I put it in my truck on the wilson 1000 mag mount and the dm 452 power mic it seems to work pretty good, but I think the recieve may still be a little off but it seems to be working. people say they can hear me good but they are very weak, I haven't tried to adjust vr2 yet but may try this weekend if I can and see what happens. I will let you know what I find out as soon as I can get too, but with 2 jobs it's hard to find time. James CEF 590 |
