I'm running a Galaxy 2517 with a stock mike on a IMAX 2000. I usually set my RF output at 10 watts dead key AM channel 20. I noticed that after talking for only about 10 min. or so my power is showing 8 watts now. After letting it sit for about 20 min it's back to 10 watts. This is the first that I noticed this going on, so I set my output to 12 watts, and the same thing now it is down to 10 watts, so I shut down for the night and the next morning I was just setting around listining in and I checked it and it was back at 12 watts! Seems to me like something is overheating and quickly. Could this be the finals heating up and dropping their output? Is this common with this radio, or do I have something else heating up? Whatever it is it only takes about 10 to 15 min. Is 10 watts on AM too much? The manual states 10 watts AM and 25 watts on SSB? Got any ideas? Bill CEF616 |

Have you checked your swr? If the swr is high, this will cause the finals to get hot. Set your radio at a lower dead key and see if it makes any difference. |

Hi Moonraker, The SWR is 1.1 to 1 on chs. 1-20-40. That was one of the first things that I checked myself. I still think that either the finals are heating up for some reason or maybe, there is a problem with the power supply. Is that possible? The rig is still under warranty: I bought it on 07-19-05. It's just one of those things, it kinds of worries me on one hand and on the other hand I should just use it until something else happens to it, know what I mean? I'll follow your suggestion: Maybe I'll try setting it at 4 watts then 6 then 8 and 10, and maybe even 12 watts this rig should handle it. I have no other complaints about it and all of my friends says that it sounds great, and LOUD with the stock mike, that's why I'm not using a power mike, and I have three of them. Thanks for the info. I'll get back to you with what I find out. There still may me a Tech. out there somewhere with an answer!!! Thanks alot for your info. and have a good one. Bill45 |

I am not familiar with thers radios and don't know what finals it has, but I would just talk on it. Are you going by an external meter or the one on the radio? I've had galaxy mobile radios that the power on the radio's meter would drop after talking on it for a while and it never hurt them. |

Hi Moonraker, I'm going by the meter in the radio, I don't have any external meters. I don't know what finals are in it either, because Coppers put a seal on the case and if I remove the seal it will void the warranty! Don't want that to happen!!! That is exactly what I'm going to do "just talk on it until something gives up all together". Everyone says that it sounds great, the most that it drops is 2 watts and nobody is going to notice that on their end: when I see it drop I'll just turn my RF Power knob up 2 watts. I appreciate your info Moonraker, thanks! and 73s to you! Bill45 |

bill45, if you are not going to send it in for a warranteed repair; then why are you hesitant to peel off the sticker? if your radio is under warrantee, send it back and ask them to do an alignment after the repair is finished. matt |

Bill45, If you sent your Warranty Card in to Galaxy after you received your radio from Copper you need to Call / Contact Galaxy and explain your problem and return it to them for Warranty Repair. Hi Lon, I thought that if I needed a repair done I was to send it to Coppers, I purchased it there and had Paul do the tune up on it the same day! He is the one who put the sticker on it, and told me if I had to send it back they will be able to tell if I tinkered around with it. Matt, I had no intention of peeling the sticker off so that I can send it in for repair without spending any bucks, except for the shipping, I think that you misunderstood me somewhere. Thanks for your info. too Matt! 73s to the both of you guys, I'll let you know how it all turns out! Or burns out!!!! Bill45 |

Hi Lon, That clears me up about the sticker, thanks! The part that gets really hot is the small box on the back of the rig with the heat sink on it. I guess that is where the finals are, because what I did today was put a small fan directed at it and my power didn't drop at all!!! After I'm done posting this I'm going to get in contact with Galaxyradios.com and send them all of the information that I found out and see what they have to say. I don't think that it is a bad final, I think that it is a cooling problem. Again thanks to all of you guys for the help and maybe I'll catch one of you guys on the air tomorrow!!! Bill45 |
