i have rg 213/u coax from copper elect. it has a 95% shield. there is a rg 213/u c-17 which is mil. spec. to 98% shield. here is my question, i have 500 feet of coax to the antenna, how much less signal loss would one expect from the 95% compared to 98% shielded cable? i just wonder if this upgrade is really worth the price difference of app. 6 cents a foot?

The difference is nominal Charliebrown, I doubt you will notice much difference.

Shielding is not the only factor. The dialectric is very important as well. Try to stick with polyethylene rather than foam.

That's a heck of a long run for regular coaxial cable, I would suggest you go with some sort of hardline if you really want low loss.

However if you want to stay on the less expensive side, you may want to look into Belden 9913, It has about the least loss you'll find in consumer grade coax. Now it IS a air-core/poly dialectric cable, BUT besides the braided shield it also offers a foil shield as well. It's darn near 100% shielded. Very good stuff.

It's tricky to work with at first but if you need help let me know!

I use the 213 / 8U from Copper PART# C60-00012 which is Made by Superior Wire Company.

I switched from Belden to Superior about 8 years ago after Belden had a price raise and back then I was selling 4000 to 5000 feet a month.

I have NEVER had any compliant's on the Quality or Performance of it in any size.

RG/213 has about 1.6 dB loss per 100 feet at 50 Mhz and below frequencies. For 500 feet your loss would be 8 dB.

Belden 9913 has about 1.1 dB loss per 100 feet at 50 MHz and below frequenies. For 500 feet your loss would be 5.5 dB.

Times Microwave LMR400 has about .9 dB loss per 100 feet at 50 MHz and below frequencies. For 500 feet your loss would be 4.5 dB.

Andrew FSJ4-50B 1/2" Superflex has a .56 dB los per 100 feet at 30 MHz and below frequencies. For 500 feet your loss would be 2.8dB.

That should about cover it.

Of course as dB loss decreases, price increases. :-)

I use the 213 also, and have been very satisfied with its performance, on a 20010 ft run. Like Lon said loss decrease price increase, that was my price limit.

Get rg213 and run a klv1000,that should take care of the 8 db loss, hehe OR get a 1 to 4 splitter and run 4 klv1000s,man that'll really put the rg213 to the test,Tech808 you could get with Tech8541 and hook this combo up and do a hands on review using a calorimeter to see how much heat is generated in the coax, then cut it open and show pics of the results,I'll bet it holds up and passes this test with flying colors.
