Many have claimed conversion possiblities for the ten meter Radio Shack Htx-10; is this true? I will quote such a claim after my second question. With so many look-a-like rigs now that have the identical frame with different faces for this less expensive Htx-10 look-a-like family- (10 meter and export CB transcievers like: Eagle, Superstar, Magnum, Cherokee, others) which one would you recommend as best quality? Now the Quote: "There is a mod for this radio '(Htx-10)' guy's. I dont care if someone at radio shack told you or someone with 30yrs of experience said it's not modifiable....it is!!! I got both radio's and schmatics compaired the two and it's the same as the magnum 257. Just goto Copper$.com....ya know the cb ham store's web site or call them for the video on the magnum like I did and you will have 26-29.690mhz. It's @ $20 for the tape...but it describes it in such detail and has a audio mod and shows you where the bias and pwr. controls are. A little luck and some green stamps like i did and youl be on 11 meters with your rig... happy playin ......ol bones said it and i'm off the key-bord.......73's KB8RBJ for all you happy hams that like to free band or just chatt on any freq. :-)~" |

I don't feel like an arguement , However I did the tape on the radios that can be modified. As for the Radio Shack , I have never modified one and know nothing about it's capabilities and/or if it can be modified. I only "heard" it can not be because of the different processor. If it can , good for you and hope you like it. As for the best bang for the buck , I use a Sidewinder 400 with a Texas Star DX-250 and love it. I am a 10 meter user though and not CB , not that it makes a difference but I had a Kenwood TS-50 for a long time and it compares. |

I have just checked with RF Limited, and the Magnum 257 has the same CPU chip as the HTX-10. Does that help whether or not the HTX-10 can be modified??? |

there are 2 versions of this radio, one was a boo boo for radio shack, the other one(new one) is not modifiable, you need to change the chip to the older version, or drop a chip from a tittan or magnum 257 in it.. I HAVE HEARD THIS WORKS, BUT HAVE NOT TRIED IT.. |

Anonymous If you want a comparison here it is. I have had experience with most of the small 10 meter radios that you are refering to. HTX-10, Cherokee, Titan, Sidewinder 400, etc, etc. The one that I favor out of the ones you are talking about is the RF Limited Mag-257. That radio has some features that the rest don't. For example, it's the only one to my knowledge that comes with dual finals, a (RIGHT-OUT-OF-THE-BOX) open clarifier, varible (IN ALL MODES) RF power control. Clarifier range is around 2kc or a little more lock to lock and my wife really likes that for the ease of clarifying while driving. On the back it has 2 heatsinks. One for the dual 1969s and another for the huge voltage regulator. The down-side of the Mag-257 that I don't like is the cheap crystals they went with. When the radio sits overnite in the car during the winter, you will be cranking the clarifier way counter-clockwise. And way clockwise when it's sat in a hot car during the summer. But after it reaches normal operating temp, it will usually pull itself to frequency or pretty close to it. Another thing I don't like about it (and the other look-alikes for that matter) is its 98% surface "Technology" mount. It's not technology. It is just a CHEAP way to build a radio. (But that's just my opinion). The mic that comes with it doesn't sound too bad but it's really tiny. I took the plugs off of the two that I have and tossed them away. I went with a pair Astatic 575s. With the tone on the Astatics set down all the way and volumm set at 1/4, mic gain at 12-1:00, the sideband audio is close to FM quality. Really impressive sounding audio for a inexpensive radio. When the radio is set up right, SSB will peak to an easy 40 watts and FM will also do a dead-key of (depending on how it's set up) 35-40. All of the radios of this similar design are not all that impressive on AM as far as modulation goes. But most of them will really kick-a$$ on SSB. In my oppinion, they were made for SSB. Other than the negatives that I mentioned, I really think the RF Limited Mag-257 has the edge over the rest of the look-alikes. Jeff, kc0gxz. |

Replace the mic on the Mag 257 and you will have all the radio you need. I just picked one up off ebay cheap. Got bad reports with the stock mic , replaced it with a Aries ( Superstar) 452 mic and getting excellent comments!! |

This is as close as I got. I had A titan Rpsy-485 With problems. I went online and got a NIB HTX-10. The titan had cheep filters but 11M modable. HTX-10 board + titan CPU/front board=MAG.257 without variable power. This is a new life For all of those titan, egale sidewinder ect. So hang on to those HTX-10's they are good parts for all of those titan, egale sidewinder ect. IMHO, I-b-a-cb-freq

Do yourself a favor SELL that HTX-10 it's not a cb set and saving it for parts for any export radio ...... i'll bet you'll get tired of looking at long before you'll need the parts. |
