A simple Cassette or Micro Cassette recorder works great as you can get 60 minutes of recording or if you have a mic on your computer you can record it to a sound file or CD.

I use a small digital recorder that connects to the computer via a USB cable. It's small enough to easily fit in a shirt pocket if you want to use it for other things, but it's nice to keep in the shack in case you need it. You can then upload the audio file to your computer and edit it if you need to. It's pretty neat and was not very expensive at all.
The digital recorders offer quite a bit of recording time with several settings for audio quality. On the highest quality setting, mine has 6 hours of recording time, 10 hours on the mid setting and on the lowest setting 16hrs. Not a tremendous difference between the settings, but if you're recording a weak signal or one close to the noise floor the highest quality setting is better. There is even a setting for the mic sensitivity which helps too.

Not if they are doing something illegal.

Under Federal law, it is not illegal. Here is the Title and sections under the U.S. Code to which this applies. The specific section here is: subsection 'g, ii, III' and 'iv' & 'v'.
As you can probably tell, this entire section is very long and drawn out and also pertains to telephones, computers, pen registers, etc, etc.
These sections pertain how the law applies to what we would need it for. I'll include a link at the bottom for those that want to read all the details. As usual with most laws, there is a lot left to interpretation and 'gray areas', but basically the 'wiretap' laws predominantly apply to situations where the party believes his conversation/communication to be private (telephone, cellphone, conversation in one's own home, etc.)
TITLE 18 > PART I > CHAPTER 119 > § 2511
(g) It shall not be unlawful under this chapter or chapter 121 of this title for any person—
(i) to intercept or access an electronic communication made through an electronic communication system that is configured so that such electronic communication is readily accessible to the general public;
(ii) to intercept any radio communication which is transmitted—
(I) by any station for the use of the general public, or that relates to ships, aircraft, vehicles, or persons in distress;
(II) by any governmental, law enforcement, civil defense, private land mobile, or public safety communications system, including police and fire, readily accessible to the general public;
(III) by a station operating on an authorized frequency within the bands allocated to the amateur, citizens band, or general mobile radio services; or
(IV) by any marine or aeronautical communications system;
(iv) to intercept any wire or electronic communication the transmission of which is causing harmful interference to any lawfully operating station or consumer electronic equipment, to the extent necessary to identify the source of such interference; or
(v) for other users of the same frequency to intercept any radio communication made through a system that utilizes frequencies monitored by individuals engaged in the provision or the use of such system, if such communication is not scrambled or encrypted.

My IC-7000 has built in recorder, some radios do so check your manual you might have it. |

I use a software program (not at home so I cannot list the name)that has a squelch built in so it runs full-time and only records when audio reaches above a set level..
Will post the name whyen I have a chance from home..
