I need a little radio with upper and lower sideband for my car. Does anybody know anything about these two radios the Midland 79-290 and Magnum 257. Which one is best? Maybe there's another one that is small. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. 73's Wendy |

The Mag-257 is twice the radio when compared to the Midland 79-290. It has far more features and is also easier to use. My wife just loves hers.

Once again I will give my 2 cents worth. The 79-290 is a wonderful radio for someone who wants a CB. It will easily modify to the 10 meter band and 6 banks of 40 channels. It does not have ANL or NB, PA, Alpha channels. It will tune up to about 17 watts, and has SSB, it also has a detachable face for security and a nice heat sink on the back. I found mine for $150.00 online. THey have since gone up in price. I wish I would have got the Magnum 257. I had a Radshack HTX-10 which is the same thing but can't be modified and it was great until it broke. Remember that the Magnum has FM whereas the Midland does not, and I have had a lot of fun with 10 meter FM it will go very far and sound very good. I talked from Colorado to Delaware with 30 watts and a 108" whip full scale. The midland would make a great low cost rig for somebody who isn't a die hard, but for someone who wants performance, features, and reliability, Magnum is the way to go. Also, Mr. Lewis who owns RF Limited actually makes an appearance on this forum from time to time to answer questions about any of his products. YOu can't get better help than that anywhere else in the world period. Go ahead and shop around, but you'll end up right back here at Copper to buy becaue they are the cheapest and have the best service anywhere, period. In the 3 years I have been on this forum I have had nothing but good luck and advice. By the way, it's nice to see a lady on the forum, please come back often.

Dan thanks for the info. I'm really interested in cb and am glad to be a part of the copper forum. It's a great place to get advice. The magnum seems to be the best way to go. However size is a major factor I've got the dimensions on both radios. I'm going to check the measurments with my car today to see which one will fit.

You will find a Lot of Helpful Forum Members here and some very good advice.
And Jeff / Tech548 is very knowledgeable on the Magnum 257 as well as the many Forum Members who own them.

I have a Magnum 257, and it is a wonderful, and reliable radio. Remember, it does have a pretty hefty draw, Wendy, so you will have to wire it to your fuse box, and NOT your cigarette lighter.

I Never have hooked a radio into the cigarette lighter always to the fuse box. I got the dimensions on the 257 today and it doesn't seem to be much smaller than my 148 gtl. Do they make a CB radio like the 2 meter ham radio that has the face plate that sets on the dash while the rest of the radio fits under your seat? |
