I currently own a cobra 148 gtl mobile. After getting a new car a dodge neon I find that my radio is a little big for it and I am at a loss as to where I can put it. Do they make another radio that will do the same thing that is smaller? I sdaw one on the internet a midland
79-290. Does anybody know anything about it?

Wendy,
You might want to look at a Hump Mount for mounting your radio as they work great.
Check out the links below and this will allow you to mount your radio to the Hump Mount.

You can also type the word 79-290 in the Search area under Utilities to the left of the forum here as there have been several posts made on the Midland 79-290.

Thanks for your help. The hump mount wont work because the gear shifter and parking break are on the hump. Thanks for the other tip

try using Velcro the wide stuff |

I had the same problem with my 1991 chev corsica.
I ended up mounting that on my dash I bent a flat peice of metal into a hook shape.
If you use your imagination you might get some thing. Good luck.
I put my rci 2950 dx in it at one point also had a palomar 250 for a day.
Unless you can try a pedistal mount type I tryed one of them in my pick up truck 86 chev 1/2 ton the shift for the 4X4 was in the way.
Mounted that on the ceiling.

I run a full size radio - Galaxy 949 in my truck, I made a hump mount for myself. I didn't care too much for the mass made ones.

Try a Toyota Tacoma hump mount no way,, all cars are not the same.

Robbie, how did you attach the mount to the floor? I have a new chevy silverado pickup and with cup holder in floor, it takes up space of where you could put the regular floor mount, and not enough space left in dash to mount the radio due to so many holes for storage and cigarete light plugs. this idea is great. Just how did you mountit to the floor? Also, is that metal that you mounted it to/ Many thanks.

WOAH WOAH WOAH!!!!! Hold up for a minute before you consider the Midland 79-290. I bought mine because of the size and the ease of modifying it. It is a great radio for its size and will open up to the 10 meter band and 6 bands of uppers and lowers, but it has a rough receive. Even with a car stereo noise filter, it picks up so much noise for the engine you can't pick up anything but an S9+60 station. It isn't alternator noise either, because it doesn't change with engine speed. It is a great base radio but if you can't try before you buy to make sure you don't have the nosie, better not chance it, go with the Magnum 257. Also, the Midland cannot do alpha channels which is a big deal to some people. Just my 2 cents, have a good one,
