Lets say you have an airplane. Now you take a multiple magnet mag mount and stick it to the UNDERSIDE of the plane set your swr and take the plane up. The question is what is the polarization of the antenna?? |

It would be non ground and be veritical polaization , just as marine radio, except not under water of course. But there is going to be a sticker of a question. where to mag mount the the antenna? Aluminum and magnets doint stick. If you found a place to stick it, It would come lose by the wind speed. Just my thoughts could be wrong though! |

for starters, vertical polarity.secondly,no matter how many magnets you use they wont"stick"to the bottom of an airplane(fiberglass or aluminum).thirdly the F.A.A really,REALLY frowns on you "sticking"anything on the outside of your plane.(they dont want any thing falling off your plane and hitting KB in the head)as a sidebar if you could do all that(theoreticly)and flew a knife edge maneuver your polarity would then be horizontal. |

Oh Was sure you all knew that or assumed that a large piece of sheet metal was pop riveted to the underside! But if you move the metal sheet to the side...then what do you have??? |

Been there, done that. If you mount the antenna to the bottom of the plane and it sticks straight down, it is vertical. Years ago, we did that in a remote area using lowband (CB) radios due to terrain. The ground crews could hear us in the plane with full scale no matter what, but could still not hear each other.. It was neat. Our gutter mount antenna was mounted to the landing gear strut horizontally with riggers tape over hose clamps (rented plane). The radio was some CB that was 23 channels (that's all there was back then) but all the controls and speaker were in the microphone, which was large. |

Up there in the air all you would need is a walkie talkie. Talk for a 100 miles. mikefromms |

O.K. Mike, good observation. Now, answer your own question when it comes to elevation improving your coverage. Will raising your antenna improve your coverage? You bet. Unless you use lossy cable to feed it. That is why I sing the praises of double shield cable (Like Times LMR series) and Heliax. Otherwise, most benefit of elevation is lost. |

But it would take 1000's of feet of coax to reach that airplane from my house. Is Times LMR series that good? he..he..he..ha..ha..ha..ha. mikefromms |
