Leaky audio coupling cap? Email a schematic to me and I will be happy to try and suggest possible parts to check.

the brownings only came with the short ping like a 20uf 450volt cap in the receiver so your birds are most likely ok and just need a bigger cap installed you can use from a 45uf-450volt cap up to a 100uf-450 volt cap .before you install the new cap be sure to discharge the old cap by grounding it out john

Move the microphone around the speaker during the ping. Move it closer/farther away, side to side until you get the sound you like.

If it is drifting, it is amlost suredly NOT the crystals. You have leaky capacitors. This is real common with older tube gear.

Recap the radio with modern caps like those from justradios.com which are sold specifically for restoring vintage tube equipment, and live happily ever after!
