I am replacing my old dead computer with a new one at the radio operator position. The old monitor was a 15" and caused a little RF interference with the radio which was 6" away. The new monitor is 17" and will still be 6" away. I hate to move the monitor too far away. QUESTION: What can I do to ensure RF interference is a minimum? ALLUMINUM FOIL?? |

Well, Allagator, if size has anything to do with it, I'm in trouble. I'm hoping bigger doesn't mean more noise. I'm also hoping someone will come up with a good solution. I can always move the monitor away from the operator position, but I want to be able to use the COPPER Internet Chat Room at the same time I'm on the radio. |

thats a shame to hear. i was going to move my radio out here soon, maybe this weekend. i guess i'll leave the original line alone and run a new piece of coax to here, so if its too noisy i can always go back to the other room. sunday net is the only reason i wanted to move it anyway. |

Just had a thought. I don't know how effective this would ultimately be, but here's the idea anyway. Build a cube out of metal window screening, leaving one side open. Place that around the monitor leaving the open side for the front of the CRT. Then ground the cage. The effect would be a Farraday cage, but the effctiveness might be minimized by the one open side. Besides, it might look like heck. Anyway, just a thought. If anyone has a better idea I would also like to hear it.

Ok, here is my setup and I have NO interference with Computer or Monitor or TV or Phone's. Galaxy Saturn Turbo and 2995DX and KLV 1000 is less than 6" to 15" from Computer and less than 20 inches from monitor. NO PROBLEM's. All Radio's and Amp are Grounded to a 10' Ground Rod I have less than 6 feet outside window. I have All Radio's and Equipment geounded and use ONLY 213U for ALL Jumper's and Antennas. Phone is less than 2 feet from Radio's and Amps and again NO PROBLEM's. I also checked and re-did the Ground in the Power Circuit box as well for the Power Outlet plugs. Hope this help's. If I get a chance to clean up a little (hehehe) I will take some pictures and post them. Lon Tech808 |

Ca346&Gator, My computer desk is right next to my radio stand so I can reach both from one location.I usually switch back and forth between two different radios, neither of which I get any interference from the computer. Also a dx394 swl reciever resides within reach, and rarly ever turn the noise blanker on.about a month ago I upgraded to a larger(cheap) monitor with no hash entering the radio gear.havn't had to do anything to combat computer generated noise yet.All the radio and computer gear are powered from the same wall receptical.Power for the computer is is first run through a 600 watt apc then into Rat Shack's top of the line surge protector/line filter/distribution strip. The radio gear is powered through an RCA surge/line filter/dist.strip designed for hometheater systems. When I get a working DSP program using the computer sound card will be the real test on the radio since they will be direct connected! |

It's a good thing you mentioned the pictures.... You promised months ago to post a picture of your set-up.... Do you have the computer or monitor grounded also in some way? |

Come to think of it, I don't know how you ever have time to work on radio's if you are always on the COPPER Forum answering questions.... You can always have Shirley take the picture... Sometimes a picture of a scattered work desk means a clean logical mind... |

I have an RCI 2970 DX on a 12 volt power supply right next to the moniter. I get no interference from the moniter, computer or printer. The moniter is a 17" Dell Flat panel LCD display. The radio equipment is in between the printer and the moniter, the Dell 8300 desk top computer is on the right of the moniter. The printer is a Konika / Minolta magicolor 2300 DL laser. My ISP is DirecTV and the Satellite box (DW6000) is between the moniter and computer. I also use double shielded RG214 coax. Looking at the computer/radio desk from left to right, I have: L[printer][2970/power supply][moniter/dw6000/Dell8300]R Good luck on getting rid of your noise. |

Look my comp is 6" away from radio on opposite side of unshielded wall and Tech 808 is CORRECT,ground, ground, ground, the magnet on the crt induces a static charge on metal sufaces nearby and grounding the cases of the units and tieing together to a common point will reduce or eliminate interference, but if you have a leaky crt,the radiation will be picked up by antenna,so if grounding does not do the trick, get a different monitor and check it,if no interference then get rid of offending monitor, unless dealing with skin cancer is no big deal to you later on.Bigbob |

I have no problems caused by my monitor, I have the computer on a different fuse from my radio gear, and I use a computer power center for my computer, have my printer on one power strip, and my radio gear on another. My monitor, and my printer have big graphite snap on gizmos on them, in the paperwork it said if I didnt use those, it could cause interference. My monitor is a 17" Daewoo Cad monitor. |

I have no probs either, my monitor is roughly 5' away from the radio cabinet. I do have good grounds on everything though. I honestly don't see why you would be getting interference from the monitor, I would have thought it would have been the other way round. But what do I know, I'm just a wildrat. |

Okay, THANKS GUYS. Sounds like I will need to make sure everything.... is grounded. I do have a 1'2" copper pipe across the back of the bench grounded to a ground rod outside. Maybe it was the OLD computer monitor only? I haven't got the new one yet. I just want to be sure everything is "A" OKAY, before I put it all together again. I have alot of coax cables coming and going... |

I get the same interference on my radios....Mine isnt on all channels, just the ones I talk on. Isnt that the way it works? Mine comes through the antenna because I get it in the mobile in the driveway just as bad as my base which is 3' away from my monitor. Buck |

if your monitor is flat screen , you will have no problem. How to fix it: Tightly draw some wrapping plastic across the fromt of your monitor, and run TTTHHHHIIICCCK wire from the plastic to a rod. It rids the static that builds up on the front of your screen. |

Ive had monitor interference in the past, and its been both the cause and the receive to it. Ive also had problems with certain computer routers. |
