If you are going to run power don't run a magnet with it. mikefromms |

Mike, That is not fair to make a Blanket Statement like that. I would suggest useing a 5" Mag at the Minimum or the 3 or 4 Mag Mount, for use with the Anttron 1700 and make sure the Antenna is Grounded well. Or if you plan on Running an Amplifier from 400 to 1000 watt's then I recommend the Wilson Mag Mount's. Model's 1000 or 5000. I HAVE NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEM's RUNNING UP TO 1000 WATTS WITH MY WILSON 1000 or 5000 MAG MOUNT's. NO BURNT PAINT, NO HIGH SWR Generally a 1.1 to 1.3 across the band, and THEY HAVE NEVER BLOWN OFF the ROOF AT OVER 170 MPH. and I HAVE NEVER HAD A GROUND PROBLEM. IF you use a "GOOD" QUALITY WELL GROUNDED ANTENNA AND A "GOOD" QUALITY MAG MOUNT YOU SHOULD HAVE NO PROBLEM's. Just my thought's. Lon Tech808

Skilletlicker, get the mm4401,and run absolutely no more than a palomar 250,2-mrf455s or 2-sd1446s and make sure your swr is no more than 1.3 to 1 with amp on or you will melt the plastic snail shaped insulator on the bottom,I solved this by subbing two 2 1/2" bolts at the tie bar and flat washers to raise the mount hole, then threw the snail and coax away and got an so-239 with stud and a 90 adaptor and 13.5 feet of mini-8,make sure you get the nylon washer with the so-239,this turns that mag mount into a real performer, and it will hold a full length whip at 100 mph,but I still suggest no more than 250 watts, but it will never go into melt down with the mods.Bigbob |

Ya know with 1"x1/4" stainless steel bar you could make a large H-frame for those mags to cover the entire roof and thus increase the coupling between antenna and roof, heck if roof is big enough the H-frame could be a ground plane in and of itself, and take the antenna off and you got a ready made roof rack, lol.Bigbob |

Just trying to help out. Then avoid the Radio shack magnet mount. It hold fine but mine wouldn't take over 50 watts for long. Just my experience. Sorry for the blanket statement on mag mounts. mikefromms |

Let me know how it works out. I really liked my A-1700. That's a really broadbanded antenna. I like the W-1000 too. mikefromms |

Okay, I've used a 3-pad mag-mount with my Big coil 55 antenna, and wilson trucker 5000, using no more than 430 watts peak(AM), with no problems. Mikefromms had problems with a 5" R/S mag-mount, but now he uses a Wilson 1000 mag with no problems. BigBob recommends using no more than a 2 pill amp with a 5" magnet, or else you'll melt some type of plastic insulator. I wasn't using any power when I was testing the speed limits of my anttron 1700, mounted on top of a 5" magnet. I got up to 55-60 mph before I lost the antenna and mag. Tech 808 states that he has never had any problems running up to a 1000 watts using either wilson 1000/5000 mags. Question-, will the copper 5" mag (V10-05602) take at least 400 to 500 watts of power? Are there any 5" mags that exist, that will take that type of power? My 5" mag is not a Radio shack either, but before I run power through, I need to be sure. Clarification is needed. No blanket statements please. Thanks. Wolverine. |

Wolverine, I edited your post above a Little as I have RUN UP TO 1000 watts with the Wilson's. My Wilson 1000's have a 4 1/2 inch Magnet on them. I have never used the 5" mag (V10-005602 so I can not honestly comment on it. But with it being 1/2 inch bigger than the Magnet on the Wilson 1000's you should not have any problem. As for the Magnet PULLING / REMOVAL Strength on the 5" Mag again I cannot honestly say. Over the years I have used about Every Mobile antenna out there, Mag Mount and Direct Mount and for Car's & 4 wheel truck's I have always went bact to the Wilson's for Un-Matched performance. If you are planning on running 400 to 500 watts the Wilson's will handle it with NO PROBLEM's. And it will be very hard to find any Mag Mount Antenna that will out Perform Them. So far I have found NONE that I have used. Just my 1st Hand Personal Experience. Lon Tech808 |

Thanks tech 808. I'm going to hook up the 5" mag-mount with the anttron 1700 and magna 350, and fire it up. That extra 1/2" width over the wilson mags should come in handy. I'll just keep my speed no greater than 45 mph with this set-up, and when I need to go over 60 mph, I'll just switch to the wilson 5000 mag. Thanks again. Wolverine. |

Applejack, You read it right, The 1st Sargant has had it up to 164 MPH and I have had it up to 176 MPH. The first Sargant and I LOVE SPEED It will be easy for those coming to Walcot, IA on April 10th for the CEF LUNCH & Get Together to find. Just look for the Big Black Impala SS with the IL. plates "LOLSS1" (Land of Lincoln SUPER SPORT #1) With a BLACK WILSON 1000 MAG MOUNT on the roof and the MAGNUM S-3 Inside. Lon

Well let's see, 2 hours to get to the last 8 or 10 miles until you hit the construction on I65 before crossing the river. Then add 3 hours for last 8 or 10 miles (CONSTRUCTION), Then once you cross the river add another 2 hr's for missing turn's in rush hour traffic. So maybe 5 Hours, 15 cups of coffee, three packs of cigarette's, Two Pilot HOT DOG's with trimming's, 4 Pit Stop's. We can make it in about7 to 8 hour's with Short nap's in between
