I have the opposite problem...

I hate vacations and time off. I love my job. Well that and the fact that after watching even 2 hours of lame morning TV I want to shoot my TV set because Oprah has some dumb adz makeover program with women going oooohhhhh ahhhhhhh.

But at work on the days off I go in, put the radio full blast to the good radio station, sing out loud with some bad dancing and get a ton of work done. Elvis watch out the DE is practicing.

Thats why I'm union.
If your holidays are paid anyway just call in sick, since sick leave is earned time anyway. As far as vacation and losing it save your leave slip because if there not paying you for it there in violation of labor laws each state is different but federal laws are the same. If you need help e-mail me.

Being self employed is not a picnic either. However, I love my work as much as life itself. When it is time for vacation, Mrs. 833 makes me take it. Sometimes kicking and scratching... Naturally, when you are self employed, there is no 'paid vacation'.

Afghanistan was not as bad as I thought it would be.

Don't feel bad guys. The job I'm at they want me to be the maintenance manager but don't want to give me what I need to do it with. Took me forever to get an office to keep all the machine manuals in. There are 20 manuals each with the 10 new machines we just got. Not to mention the 21 old machines that have about 5 to 10 manuals a piece. Now I am trying to get a computer to keep maintenance records in and find parts on the internet with. They're old maintenance guy was a slob so the storage sheds are an unorganized mess with piles of junk everywhere. He was a real pack rat. And to top it all off he never took a bath so he smelled like B.O. all the time. He finally retired last week.

Have a great week everyone.

Cactus,
Sounds like my job. Dryer went out so I was asked to fault find it. Found a bad valve that was cutting off the gas - was I allowed to fix it? No then owners then called a guy from Portland (5 hours away) to fix it. Same day a drunk kicked the toilet door in splintering the trim work. I was toild to remove the damaged wood but wasnt allowed to buy new pieces to replace it. Next week we have a carpenter coming in to do it.

So my $64 question - why am I being employed as Maintenance??

OPH yeah I also supposed to maintain the crazy software they use - a version of Micros that runs under DOS (yep that old) and a Hotel program called Nightclerk. After 2 years there I have yet to be allowed to see a manual for either. Manuals are kept locked in the owners office, which is only open when he is there.

Ozzie,

I am glad to hear that I am not the only one to have a job like that. We had a machine go down and they ask me to troubleshoot it, so I went to work and figured it out. It was an Input/Output board failure. I told the my boss and he said to call the machine manufacturer and have them send out a machine tech to look at it. The machine tech found the same thing wrong and charged us $600 for 30 min worth of work. Then we had to order a new I/O board for $1700 and I had to replace it. BTW that circuit board is only about 4 inches square.

Hang in there.

I work a state university job. We have every conceivable holiday off. Can't complain, we had 12 paid days off this Christmas... We work 7.5 hour days and flex time is available. My boss is very workable on days off and vacation. She says, "if you got it, take it when you want."
Can't complain.

you say you need a new job, be glad you have one. I might not have one come march 1. Joe Brown sold out to the Dolice's Bro's and they say only the most quilifed will get hired. I don't have but 4mos. in ready mix so I might be out. If you got a job don't complain, here in Ada ok if you got a job your lucky. My mom lost her job cauze her employer shut down the plant to move up north back in Novenber. In Ada the last year there has been at least 4 company's shut down. Lot of people out of work and I might be next. So if you have a job keep it. You never know. Don't mean to make any body mad, but I'm worried.

Well on the job front you wont beleive this one but I work management for a local government,we just laid off 17 people which we could not afford to cut,I got a raise last year, the first one in 4 years and you guessed it no raises this year. The 10 of us not in the unions are averaging 55 to 60 hours a week. This month we had 12 night meetings and only get 9 paid holidays a year and no vacation carry over either.Everyone thought Government workers had it made !

My wife was a gov. worker, janitor, she cleaned three court rooms,20 offices, ten restrooms,1 large law library, three jury rooms,4 judges offices, plus all hallways,3 fouriers, six stairways and dumped all the trash which she had to hall by cart 200 feet to outside dumpster;union,10.85 an hour, all gov. holidays,15 days vac.7 sick days,2$ co-pay on prescriptions, fully paid health insurance on both of us,then she fell down the stairs;one year of workmans comp at 65%,then 55,000 settlement. Now,two years later, she is unemployable, second try for disability,if she can't get that we will lose our house.Three times I have gotten pay advances to pay telephone, electric bills, fuel pump went out in truck and that was 400$,my pay checks will be meager for the next 4 weeks.I'm 50 and my joints are going to hell in a handbasket, from being a human forklift, her joints are allready shot,if we lose the house the cheapest rent is 150$ more a month than our mortgage. Can you believe 500$ a month for a 8x42 travel-trailer 40 years old, gimme a break.

I guess maybe I should be greatfull were I work.It might not be the worst place to work. They pay ok and have quartly bounus, profit shareing at the end of the year and years of service bounus. The Insurances is great!

I can understand how dealing with the government works. My brother had a stroke a little over two years ago and what his wife had to put up with is a bunch of nitemares. You cant do this or you cant make this amout of money! How do people get by!When my brother had the stroke I took out a loan on my 401-k and paid there house payment for a year.Thank God they got into a Habitat for Humanity house!

Somedays I feel sorry for my self and I think of my brother(Dale Hanson)I've got it so good!!Dale was 38 when he had his stroke.

Take care one and all!Gage(Wayne Hanson)

I am greatful for my job! I would really not like it if I had to go somewhere else.
I have an easy and an easy to do job, just a very lot of responsabilities.
But there is no where I can go to work and do what I do and make the kind of money I can make!
and my benefits are not the greatest in the world but I do have benefits!
I work vertially no weekends, I get home sometimes everyday no longer than two days out!
But this is just my two cents.
Take care Hornet

Well I got good new's for myself yesterday. The Dolese Bros Co. has hired me. I thought for sure they would have let me go. Out of seven employes at Joe Brown, only three made including me. That was a close call. Well thought I'd tell everbody the good news.

Bigbob, get a lawyer who specializes in disability cases. I understand the gov't jerks fold and give in when you walk in with a known good lawyer.

I am beginning to understand the un-employable issue. I stand 6" 1" and weigh in at 450+. When I mail in a resume or call and talk to a business about jobs they are very interested but when I go in for an interview or to make a personal visit they take one look at me and seem to quickly dismiss me for one reason or another! When did looks start winning over who and what you know and how good you are at what you do!? :~(

Also, your profile picture looks familiar...have you ever lived in the Central Virginia area?

I'll be lifting up you and the XYL in our prayers!

Bigbob,
I know several people who have put in for ss disability, third time seems to be the charm. Also as mr RF said, a lawyer helps a great deal. The only good thing is when she gets it she will get back pay from the first date she put in for it. Mr RF, Unfortunately discrimination is a huge part of our working environment. If your knowledge, and work ethic, and performance was the basis for getting or keeping a job, what a great world this would be! Lots of slugs have gotten or kept jobs even though they were inept, just due to their looks, body, or personality!
