I run two 99's , a 4400hp Connex and other various radios all with stock mikes. These radios have super modulation and sound as good as it gets.Power mikes pickup all kinds of noise ,squeal on talkback, and usually you have to turn your mike gain way back which is defeating the purpose of having a power mike.Power mikes may have been needed somewhat on radios twenty years ago. Also I'm sure the manufacturer will tell you how much better you're going to sound with their mike. The above statement will probably be pounced upon by every power mike lover in radio land ,but it's just my opinion. |

Anonymous and vernonott, I have a Galaxy 99 and I run it as a base station with a Astatic 575M6 power mic. After reading your posts I decided to do a little experiment. With my PDC600LP meter inline I measured modulation and forward RF swing using the amplified mic and then took the same measurements with the mic that came with the radio. Here's what I found out... On AM mode I get the about the same swing and modulation with both microphones. The 575M6 gives me a hair more, but enough to notice. On SSB mode I need the power mic to get the full output of the radio. The stock mic is just not acceptable for SSB use with this radio. I am a power mic lover, but what I love more is a radio that's loud but not overmodulated so much that splatters all over the place. |
