Hi Skilletlicker, Radio Shack put the "Navaho" name onto numerous models, kinda like some Ford products that have "Mercury" printed on them. Some "Navaho" models were 23-channel AM-only radios, some were 40-channel SSB/AM base radios. Without a model number, there's not much else to tell, except that if it says "Navaho" it's probably pretty old. I'm pretty sure they quit using that name at least 18 years ago. 73 |

the reason that i asked was i bid on a realistic navaho base without asking to many questions, looks like it is a 40 channel as it has a digital channel readout,so i guess i will find out when i get it.like buying a pig in a poke got it for $39.99 plus shipping so i guess i wont lose to much |

Skilletlicker, When you get it, go to the Ask The Tech Section and post a note under Base Radios and include the MODEL NUMBER on Radio. I should be able to get you some tune-up modification's for it. Lon Tech808 |

Leadfoot, Unless you are lucky enough to find someone who has a set, you will have to order them through Radio Shack if they still have them. Lon Tech808 |

What are the numbers on the front of the rig? If its a 457 458 or 490 or so you have a winner of a radio if it isnt hacked up inside. |

all i see is 459, it's a good talking radio if i can just get the squeal fixed, as far as i know i'm the only fingers that has been inside, i was assured that it was virgin when i bought it, that was the main reason i bought it, the squeal appeared before i opened the radio |

CM 3885 I have an untouched TRC-490. Whats so great about this radio? I took the cover off about 10 years ago and blew the dust out and put the cover back on. Thats how virgin this radio is! ;) |

The 490 uses the 8719 PLL and it is capable of chanels and a good NPC/RC mod that is used on the 148GTL and the Grant XL and 142GTL base.. Its a good radio trust me! |

If you want a good Navaho SSB Base try to find a TRC-490. One of the best in the Navaho line. Uses the same board that the Cobra 148 GTL (the older good ones) uses. Easily modified and a strong talker. |
