dave :I ran the old D&A's for many years and I used to audio into the mike while I tuned just as you have said.I've since been told that you shouldn't do what I use to do but I did it to get more watts out of it and it didn't appear to hurt the unit although it may have reduced tube life.

Tune bottom adjustment knobs (driver, driver tune) to peak, tune top adjustment knobs (plate, tune) to peak. Then re-adjust plate and tune for peak with modulation. Do not hold key down for longer than 5 seconds while tuning. This amp is low drive, 4 watt max. Ron

A little known procedure is to "overcouple". After loading and tuning the amp as described, turn the LOAD control slightly clockwise until you see a slight drop in wattage. (only a couple of watts) Also, if you have a mic gain control on the radio, tune and load the amp for highest wattage with the modulation turned off. These methods will result in extremely clear transmissions. Be sure to only run about 80%modulation; any more only results in dirty sounding audio. I hope this helps you!

For maximum tube life, tune the plate tune control for lowest plate current, then the loading control for the amount of power you want. Then, finish up by retuning the plate tune for minimum plate current.
