Hey guys my first DX was 7 miles on my new Voyage VR 9000!! Ok stop laughing, anyway this guy I was chattin with said antennas like the Wilson 5000 need to be put in all the way, tested and most likely will need to be cut about a quarter inch at a time to tune it just right, they are made a little long just for this. Is this right?

Go ahead and buy a decent power / swr meter now ,hook it up to your system and read the swr .If it's in the 1.1 to 1.3 range leave it alone. If it's higher grind off no more than 1/8 inch at the time until you get it down.Make sure your vehicle doors and hood are closed and that you are not near any metal buildings or up under trees etc.Good luck and congratulations on the 7 mile DX.

Thanks vernonott,
just got home from the local hill, pushed 16 miles on AM tonight and chatted with a guy up the coast in Anaheim near Disneyland which is 85 miles on 27.385 LSB, he said I was comin in strong and clear, still need to hook up the KLV40 and tune the antenna. Hopefully when I do that I'll be goin outta state!
For anyone considering the Voyage VR9000, I'm no expert but I don't think you can go wrong, stay tuned for updates regarding the antenna tunning and amp install.
