I want to put a ssb cb radio in my Scout. The scout is driven 90% off road.So the radio is subjected to a lot of bouncing and bumps. I drive on a wash board dirt road daily.I ran a 29ltd in my jeep 4-ever w/o any problems, but it's not ssb.I had a galaxy 959 in my pickup and it had problems with the solder joints. So whats a good ssb radio that can withstand bumpy roads and bad weather? |

A cobra 148 gtl in my book would be a very good radio, problem is you can't hardly find any of the old ones that people want to get rid of, that is if they work, I always have ran many different cobra and Midland radio's in my 4x4's without any problems, of coarse not to menchon my cb antenna getting ripped out once but no big deal took me 10 min to fix and I was off again.lol. good luck and 73's |

See if you can find an old Cobra 148 that was made by Uniden. Will withstand alot of abuse.Like your 29, it was called the "truckers choice" for extreme mobile conditions.Keep an eye on ebay, they have alot of 148's on there all the time. |

A Galaxy wont be a good choice for an off road'er. Use a Cobra 148. Not too expensive and has sideband. Try to find an older one. But no Galaxy. |

Chris, Man, if a Galaxy wouldn't hold up to that you musta had a bad Galaxy. Those things are usually pretty tough. My first suggestion would be a Galaxy or a Superstar or similar. But.... You may want to go with a lightweight radio like the Midland 285 or 290. This way the heft of the radio isn't causing itself to rattle apart. May I suggest, that whatever you get, to make sure the way it's mounted is secure as possible. You may even want to trash the crappy mounts that come with the radio and make something tougher. I agree....i have had a few 148's and had prooved to be a stand up radio....will take alot of punishment.Be sure to mount it good and solid. Like 181 said, the Galaxy and Superstars are good radios also. 431 |

A radio with a smaller chassis will have more chance of sustaining the punishment because of less "flex" room. Maybe a Sidewinder/Titan II/Blackhawk/Magnum 257, or the Midland 79-290. |
