what all gps units have nmea hookups for aprs? ive got a kenwood tm-d710a for the big truck to run aprs but theres alot of gps units out and haven found one yet with nmea

(was going to post in ham gear or open fourm...)

I dont know about the newer navigation system types... the older hand-held Magellan and Garmin units with serial outputs (most need a custom cable) have worked just fine for me.

The magellan 300 series and garmin eMap series should be dirt cheap used these days.

ok im sorry but ive tried to post this in ask the tech twice and its not showing up...

ive got a kenwood 710a and im lookin for a gps to use in the semi for aprs and im looking for ideas ive tried searching and theres alot but none say if they have nmea in for the data on the gps

any ideas? maybe this will post

The easiest setup there is to begin doing APRS is the Byonics TinyTrak. Byonics.com will have allt he info. Byonics also provides an all-in-one GPS magnet mount antenna that is super small, and has NMEA string output.

I have 2 of the complete units, and they are really super simple and work well.

sorry for the double post thoght it would show right after, ive got a open tracker in my pickup on my 8800 wich is like the byonics but id like to have one with a screen here in the big truck there was a guy local who has a garmin nuvi 350 but couldnt talk to him long enuff to get more info ive heard u had to buy a spec cable cuz u cant change the language in that unit? and unless avmap got cheaper id like more ideas if anyone can help
