I meant changing r228 to a 1n4001. What does this do in a Grant XL?

it allows the radio to swing up to its max. PEP potential from any deadkey setting.
anyone wanting a "clean signal", just look to the left and build one of these!!!

OK, you said banded end to rear. HOWEVER, R228 runs horizontal (Parallel) to the rear). While looking at it from a birds eye view, I see the transformer to the left, and D63 right under it. What to do??? thanks.

i looked at my 148gtl to get the position of the resistor.
sorry, its different in the grant XL.
the banded end of the diode would go toward the right. toward the audio IC. (TA7222)

I did it. Funny thing now. I dead key 1/2 watt, swing to about 17. But when I finish my sentences, it takes about 2 seconds for it to go back down to 1/2 watt. I actually like that though as opposed uit being almost instant.

IMO you should turn your deadkey up to 2 or 3 watts.
but thats just me.
if you are talking about the S meter descending slowly back down, its just the meter doing that.
your signal is not actually doing that.
if it was, it would mean that you had some sort of an echo going on after you finish talking.
glad the mod worked for you.
