Bruce,

A Receive Kit is generally advertised to:

Boost the incoming signal up to 6db!
Greatly quietens the receive from unwanted noise.
Greatly improves noise blanker (NB) performance.

I did a GOOGLE search for: CB Receive Kit

Personally I have never found a reason to use or try one before so I have no idea if they really work or not.

In my 2970 I put a 2sc2999e-sca in place of q-18 and put the one out of q-18 in where q-16 was. My question is couldn't I put another 2999 in the place of the one in q-16 to reduce the noise floor for ssb? I also changed d-34/45/ and d-1/d-2 to 6263 schottky diodes on AM it is really quite and on ssb it is still noisy.

The noise floor is determined by the first stage ( Q18 )

Now even though it might not make much diffrence replacing other stages with low noise high gain devices should not hurt.

Bruce I replaced q-18 the am first stage amplifier and it dropped the noise floor tremendously on am it sounds sweet! I believe I will leave am like it is. The transistor I took out of q-18 is a 2sc-1674 that is the one I put in q-16 the ssb first stage amplifier so you are saying it should help ssb? I have 1000 or more Of the 2sc-2999e-sca transistors so I'm not worried about wasting a few. This radio has had the tx side modded including the linear and the audio is very clear and loud done by a electronic engineer that knows what he is doing. I looked at the data sheets and I don't see why it would hurt like you had mentioned but I was making sure before I replaced the ssb side.

yep the first stage is what buys you the increase in gain and drop in noise what ever works feel free to go with it ...

I went ahead and changed it and it made some difference in the ssb noise, not as much as am but any is good. Thanks...

Does anybody know off hand, what transistor to switch in a Magnum S980, if it would help, and what # transistor/s to change. Also I had changed the detector, and noise blanker diodes in a Galaxy 959 to NTE 583's and it made a dramatic improvement! My problem now is the copier at work is down so I can't enlarge Magnum diagram to be able to see it! (yes I'm past 40, and can't see close to well:-)).
Tnx

TR017, 2SC2786ML....don't quote me on that though, my computer is kicking & not cooperating here as of late. if i remember, it is NOT a 2sc1674 in the magnums, but it is in the same spot as most other radios.....because they're all the same anyway. the S9-80 used 2 different boards, not sure which is which so check 1st.
in my S9, this mod made bleedover more conspicuous even with a channel guard added, which just changed the tone of the bleedover, making it more irratating.
did i say i'm thinking about an S9-175
