OK, here is a strange one, but it has been fixed. When I installed the 706 into the Hyundai I didnt have a bolt on spade terminal for ground,(easier to remove the radio when I want to) so I made one by sweat soldering a spade terminal to a ring terminal.

A week so back I noticed a strange rushing sound, almost like that made by a regen detector, in the 706 whenever the engine was running, stationary or moving.

Yesterday, I upgraded the installation by fitting a fusebox at the end of the long battery cable (gauge 4) run. At this time I notice the the home made ring/spade had broken. I replaced with a proper one and no more noise. Still do not know what was making it, but a good ground fixed it.

Hi Simon Tech237
Had something very similar happen to me also . I still do not understand what happen . But i redid my ground and it stoped.
Ok about 2 years ago i mounted a Icom 2000 (2meter) rig in the truck. The first thing did was check swr and everthing checked ok. Check into local repeaters and everthing was ok. The first week after install something real strange was going on??? The first thing i do is turn on the Icom and Listen for local repeter chat. While driveing to work if nobody was talking i would turn on the am/fm radio to a local radio station 104.5 for news and music anyrate every time i reached to turn the volume up the Icom went off squelch mode and sounded if you keyed the mic. Which it wasnt doing. I didnt have to touch the am/fm radio just put my finger close to near the radio buttons and not touch it. and the Icom did act like it was keyed up . Strange i tell you ! (2 meter repeter fqc.146.970 and am/fm radio 104.5) No other am/fm radio station just 104.5 thats spooky. Any rate i found that i pulled a ring or washer ground from the Icom to a ground point on the firewall of the truck. Redid the ground and solder my connections . I doint trust spade crimp connections anymore.
But all the time the ground was disconnected from the radio swr was ok and talking 15 miles to the repeter on 5 watts it was working. I cant explain what happen and still doint understand it. I do understand 2nd 3rd and so forth radation harmonnic's but the frequency's do not match Im Lost???????????? A good one to think about.

Simon I see what your getting at but i think the first IF stage is around 22.000Mhz signal to the mixer.Thats close enought. I will check that out. If i find the schematic? I forget the math correct me if wrong 22.000mhz to mixer multiplying 9 times mixer Mhz what ever that may be . I will keep digging for the schematic.
Thanks
