I agree with Bruce on the polarity of the antenna. As for height depending on the actual ground you are mounting it over, generally multiples of a half wave work best, i.e. 18ft, 36ft etc. Having said that, I will add that you can go too high and lose more than you gain due to cable loss. I have a pulley I attached to my mast at about 50 feet, I will use the pulley pull the dipole into a diagonal position about 45 degrees with mast, now the telescopic mast is about 67 feet high, zinc covered steel, will this impede the performance of the dipole? Joe |

I ran a DX-CC dipole untill I went with the 12avq I compaired both on 20 meters and could find little diffrence .... So I took the DX-cc down and now have a R7 ready to go up. I just don't see any big difrence between vert and horz. |

For short hops ('skip') like E-layer and Sporadic E, a horizontal dipole works better because it will send more signal skyward. For F-layer skip, in many cases, the vertical (over adequate counterpoise) works better because it concentrates more signal on the horizon. For ground wave (local), the vertical is usually better for same reasons as F layer. |
