try replacing C179 (a 2.2uf tantalum cap located near the final and driver)
replace it with a 2.2uf ELECTROLYTIC capacitor.
rated at 16 volts or more.
that should cure your problem.

ha ha! success!

aint that a great feeling?
and you now know more about the inside of your radio than if you'd taken it to a tech.
congratulations on a successful repair!

More success on 139 xlr never would have thought of c179 to cure my problem with transmit. Got that fixed so I'm gaining. Now I have a carrier on ssb. Bought this radio dead and trying to bring it back to life. So far so good. Anyone have any Ideas on the one that just revealed itself? Everything else works fine. Thanks Matt

Thanks Dale, I tried that the VR# is vr4 and has no effect, also the vr is good and working.Seems like a weird problem, all the ic's are good the carrier is there which shouldn't be but doesnt actually modulate anything. My watt meter shows a swing to 18 watts output on AM but no one can hear me it seems like nothing is really going out the antenna but i'm sure it is putting out some kind of signal. Everything lines up frequency wise and tunes up good, The receive is great. Thanks again, anymore ideas anyone?? Thanks Jim

Sounds like a good place to check but I just made the coaxes and tested them but no short there. Dont think that would cause a carrier to be on sideband mode. Thanks Jim
